Features

  • The Naze: The Naze Tower is dramatically situated on cliffs at the Naze, an attractive natural headland stretching northwards from the seaside town of Walton-on-the-Naze into the North Sea. Derived from the old English word ‘naes’ meaning promontory or, more literally, nose, the Naze is a hidden gem where land meets sea. It is well known for the historic Naze Tower, its ancient fossils, the wildlife and its ongoing battle against the sea.
  • The Gallery: The Naze Tower art gallery features three exhibitions each year. Throughout our season we show and sell work by established and up coming artists from East Anglia working in a range of media including 2d, 3d and crafts. Much of the art is inspired by the local area and coastline and sometimes the Naze and the Tower itself. All the artworks in the gallery are for sale including crafts, unframed and framed artworks from £10 upwards. The small shop in the Tower on the ground floor sells books, gifts, souvenirs and cards.
  • The Museum: The museum explores the fascinating history of the Naze Tower and provides information on the ecology and geology of the Naze, the coastal erosion problem and the Crag Walk coastal scheme. A collection of fossils and artefacts found at the Naze are on display. If you have any interesting information, images or items on the Tower, the Naze or Walton Backwaters, we would love to hear from you.
  • Our History: Trinity House built the 86ft octagonal Naze Tower in 1720 as a navigational mark to aid shipping. Originally housing a beacon it is the predecessor of the reflective lighthouse that became commonplace in the 19th century. The Naze Tower is a Grade II listed building of unique architectural and historic interest and is the only one of its kind in existence. This listing places it in the top 5% of heritage buildings and the top twenty listed lighthouses in the country.
  • Viewing Platform: Lots of people go up the Naze Tower for the spectacular 360° panoramic views from the viewing platform at the top. What you see changes daily and even hourly with the tides and the weather. You reach the top via a 111 step spiral staircase but the view is well worth the climb! There are eight rooms in the Tower so there are constant breaks in the climb and you can go at your own speed and take in the museum and art galleries on the way.
  • Exhibitions: Each year three diverse art exhibitions are shown at the Naze Tower, featuring work by established and emerging East Anglian artists. All the artworks are for sale.

Facilities

  • Parking: Parking is in The Naze Pay and Display Car Park near the Tower.

We have picnic benches and tables and chairs with windbreakers.
