Description

The Oxford Bus Museum has its origins in the Oxford Bus Preservation Syndicate, which was set up 52 years ago in 1967 by a group of bus enthusiasts. They had the foresight to see that buses and coaches of significance to previous generations should be saved and preserved for future generations to enjoy before they were lost for all time. Beginning with just one vehicle (pictured underneath) - which can still be seen and ridden on today, the number of preserved and restored vehicles has grown, and the museum now contains around 40 vintages buses and coaches, including a number of unique vehicles, the earliest dating from 1913.

What to see

OXFORD BUS MUSEUM
At the Oxford Bus Museum we tell the story of bus and coach travel around Oxfordshire over the last 130 years. Our exhibits include a historic preserved horse-drawn tram, motor buses, coaches and a wide selection of artefacts - including bus stops, ticket machines, timetables, posters and staff uniforms. We also have lots of fantastic photos illustrating our diverse public transport history through the ages.

MORRIS MOTOR MUSEUM
Since 2004 we have also been home to the Morris Motors Museum, which charts the story of how these classic British cars and commercial vehicles were produced at Cowley, in Oxford. Our impressive collection of vintage Morris vehicles represents those produced during William Morris's life.

HISTORIC CYCLE COLLECTION
They also have a wonderful collection of historic cycles on exhibition upstairs in the Morris Motors Museum. Our collection boasts some technically interesting examples starting from the mid-1800s. We have some examples of penny-farthings and a replica of a gentleman’s hobbyhorse or “boneshaker” - these machines were mainly made from wood, so few have survived to the present day.

SCHOOL VISITS
Educating and inspiring the next generation to have an interest in Oxfordshire's transport history is a key aim of ours. We, therefore, welcome visits from school groups (up to 30 people) on Wednesdays. Children pay the normal child entrance fee, teachers are admitted FREE.

SPECIAL VISITS
They may be able to open the museum for private parties by special arrangement (outside normal opening hours). A minimum charge of £100 applies.
