Portland Bill Lighthouse is an iconic red and white tower standing proudly at the southern tip of the Isle of Portland. First lit on 11 January 1906, it has guided ships safely through the hazardous waters of the English Channel for over a century. Today, it offers visitors a chance to explore its history and enjoy spectacular views of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.

Visitors can take a guided tour climbing 153 steps to the top of the 41-metre tower and into the lantern room, where you can see panoramic views stretching for miles. Inside, the optic removed in 2019 is now displayed at the tower base, and informative exhibits share the lighthouse’s maritime history before you even begin the climb. For those who prefer to stay at ground level, the Visitor Centre provides fascinating displays and a charming shop selling unique gifts.

  • Standing 41metres tall on the south point of Portland Bill, it has guided passing vessels through the hazardous waters surrounding the area while also acting as a waymark for ships navigating the English Channel.
  • The displays and information are very interesting before you even climb a stair, but it’s certainly worth all 153 steps to witness the magnificent views from out of the picture-book windows on the way up, as you stop to catch your breath!  
  • At the top in the ‘lantern room’ you can see Dorset’s beautiful Jurassic coast for miles. You can take a guided tour to the Top of the lighthouse and into the lantern room with spectacular views of the Jurassic coast and the whole of ‘Portland Bill’.
  • You’ll even get a badge if you make it to the top and occasionally, if you have been very brave, one for when you make it back down.
  • For those who do not wish to ascend the 155 steps to the very top of the Lantern Room, we have our informative Visitor Centre and charming shop where you’ll find interesting and unusual gifts for all pockets and ages.

  • By Car: Follow signs from Weymouth to Portland on A354. When you are on the Isle of Portland follow signs to Portland Bill and continue until you can go no further. Portland Bill Lighthouse is distinct with it’s bright red band and stands right on the end of Portland Bill next to the large municipal car park.
  • By Bus: From late May to late September there is an open-top bus service between Weymouth and Portland Bill.  The Portland Coaster 501 bus, runs every two hours during the quieter season and every hour during the school summer holidays. The service starts and finishes at the Kings Statue (stop K5).
  • By Train: The nearest Railway Station is as Weymouth where you will need to transfer to a bus or catch a taxi to Portland Bill.
