Features

  • Whales, Dolphins & Porpoise: The best time to see minke whales in Scotland is from the end of May to September. Dolphins and porpoise are here all year round. Our local area is one of the best areas in Scotland for porpoise and we see them on the vast majority of summer trips. There is a population of about thirty bottlenose dolphins which we regularly see. However, as they are wild animals, we cannot guarantee sightings of any particular species.
  • Eagles: An adult sea eagle can reach a wingspan of 2.4 metres, making them slightly larger than golden eagles. They tend to soar on flat wings, as opposed to the golden eagle which generally hold the wings slightly bent upwards in a ‘V’ shape.
  • Seals: The smallest of our two native seals, and despite its name, there are far fewer common seals in British waters than grey seals! Preferring to feed on fish and sand eels, and rarely taking crabs and other crustaceans, a full-grown adult common seal can reach up to 130 Kilos in weight.
  • Otters: The Eurasian otters we see here are the same ones as in our rivers, and they still need to live nearby some freshwater source. Scotland has the vast majority of the UK population and the west coast in particular has a lot of great otter habitat.
  • Seabirds: The puffin is one of the most enchanting of our seabirds. It is unmistakable, with its bright yellow, red and blue bill, and its bright orange feet.
  • Deer: A native deer to Scotland, and originally a deer of forests, red deer have adapted to a life on open hills and moorland.
  • Wild Goats: Feral, or wild goats are believed to have been introduced to the British Isles by stone-age farmers, and have been introduced by the first farmers 5,000 years ago.
  • Basking Sharks: Every summer basking sharks are sighted off the west coast, and you may see them on any of our boat trips. These huge fish are the third largest fish in the sea.
  • Whirlpool: All trips visit the Corryvreckan Whirlpool where under certain conditions turbulent tides create one of the world’s largest series of whirlpools, upwellings and standing waves.

What to see

Trips: All of our trips operate in the one of the most highly protected marine areas in Britain. The Firth of Lorne is a Special Area of Conservation and a Marine Protected Area, where damaging fishing methods have been banned for a decade. As a result we have healthy fish populations which provide rich feeding grounds and a hotspot for sightings of whales, porpoises, dolphins, basking sharks and an amazing abundance of sea birds. Porpoise populations have increased by 286% over the past 10 years and are of international importance.
We schedule our trips at different times each day according to the tides so that you are in the best location at the optimal time to see feeding activity.
