Founded by Walter Douglas Campbell, St Conan’s Kirk is a unique piece of Scottish history, combining a range of architectural styles to create a timeless landmark. Explore its stunning stonework, intricate wood carvings, and serene surroundings, which make it a place of peace and reflection.

This mix match of architectural styles is accompanied by a clear sense of joy and fun with images such as owls, swallows, griffins, angels peeking from roof supports, cheeky faces in stone and an abundance of cherubs in stone, wood and glass.

Cloisters: Cloisters were a common feature in the old Abbeys of Scotland, however, we believe St Conan's is the only Kirk that boasts them. It's here that we start to see how Walter Campbell was a real pioneer of recycling. We've picked out a few of the key features. Battleship Beams, Mason’s Marks, Lion, Pilgrim Knight, The Norman Archway.
South Aisle: Entering the Kirk form the Cloisters, you find yourself in the South Aisle, or St Columba's. Here, you are surrounded by Saints and Angels. Listed are a few of the key features you'll find.Tracery Window, St Brides Chapel, St Conval’s Chapel, Angels on High, Gabriel’s Window, St Michael’s Window.
St Fillans Aisle: St Fillan is the local Saint of Strathfillan, which lies between Tyndrum and Crainlarich to the East of Loch Awe. This small Aisle in the Kirk holds some of the more beautiful features, such as the window and the Bruce chapel, listed here. MacCorquodale Window, Gates to the Crypt, St Mary’s Window, The Bruce.
Apse: Dominated by the imposing pillars, the Nave is one of the most striking features of the Kirk. Ambulatory, Table and Chairs.
Chancel: It is possible to spend hours in the Chancel, admiring the intricate carvings on the clan stalls. Clan Stalls and Griffons, The Font.
The Nave: The Nave, with it's impressive Rose Window, is now only used of occasional public worship, although we do hold many Weddings in the Kirk. Victoria, Organ Screen, Rose Window.
Bell Tower: The Bell Tower, does indeed contains bells, however, the floor requires urgent repairs, so the bells haven't been heard for quite some time. Penitent Window, Glass Box.
Outside: As well as many beautiful and quirky features inside the Kirk, you'll find the outside just as interesting. Here are a few of the features. St Conan, Sun Dial, Hound and Hares, The Celtic Cross.

Facilities

Parking: There is limited parking at the Kirk as well as some parking spaces on the laybys on the main road. Please take care crossing the road.
Food & Drinks: During the summer months, visitors can enjoy a drink and perhaps some home baked cake from the small tearoom located in the gatehouse.

By Car: We are 20-30 minutes away by car from neighbouring Oban, Crianlarich and Inverary, an hour and a half from Fort William, Dunoon and Glasgow and 2 hours from Edinburgh.
By Train: The Lochawe train station is 1km away with a footpath all the way to the Kirk. There is limited/no taxi service in the area.
Public Trasnport: The 2 main public transport options are bus with 6 per day in each direction Oban- Glasgow with the bus stopping 100 yards from the Kirk and the Train (8 per day) Oban-Glasgow.
Parking: There is limited parking at the Kirk as well as some parking spaces on the laybys on the main road. Please take care crossing the road.
