Description

Steeple Grange Light Railway is a volunteer-run heritage railway near Wirksworth in Derbyshire. It is Wirksworth’s first heritage railway and is built on the historic trackbed of the former Killer’s Branch line. The railway offers a unique and educational experience set within dramatic limestone scenery.

Visitors can enjoy a 25-minute round-trip train ride along the main line to Middleton, passing through limestone cuttings, as well as a shorter branch line ride into Steeplehouse Quarry. The railway uses 18-inch gauge track and operates with ex-industrial diesel, petrol, and battery-electric locomotives. Passengers travel in original manriders once used by miners, and volunteers are on hand to share railway history and show fossils found in the local area.

Ticket prices are £6 for adults, £5 for concessions, £4 for children, with infants aged 3 and under travelling free. A family ticket costs £18 for two adults and up to three children, and single fares are £1.50.

With its unusual trains, knowledgeable volunteers, and scenic setting, Steeple Grange Light Railway offers a memorable visit. It provides a rare chance to experience a working light railway with strong links to local industrial history. This attraction is ideal for families, railway enthusiasts, and anyone looking for something a little different to explore.
