Features

  • Tudor House: Although from the front , Tudor House looks like one large house, it was originally three separate houses facing on to St Michael’s Square. There were other houses behind them, running down Blue Anchor Lane. The house has been added to and changed many times over the years to suit the owners needs and wants.
  • Tudor Knot Garden: The Tudor Knot garden is a beautiful re-creation of a traditional garden full of period plants, a rose arbour and a tunnel of vines and water feature. It’s especially magical in late spring with rich scents of the different sorts of aromatic herbs and flowering plants for the bees. The perfect place to sit and enjoy a great coffee or tea from the café.
  • Southampton Museum and Archive Collections: Cultural Services Team, run by Southampton City Council, look after four venues and four unique collections. At Tudor House and SeaCity Museums, visitors can explore some stories about people and events from Southampton’s distant and more recent past. At the City Archive you can research a wide variety of topics, such as the history of your house or relative coming into the port of Southampton. At Southampton City Art Gallery there’s world class collection of fine art that rotates on display in the main hall.
  • Highlights: Leather Jug, Stocks – by Aaron Matthews (Volunteer), The Southampton Book of Hours, Ship Engravings, Penny Farthing, Sedan Chair – by Tabitha Cook (Volunteer), Hot Cross Bun – by Aaron Matthews (Volunteer), Glass Panes and more.
  • King Johns Palace: King John’s Palace is one of the finest surviving examples of Norman architecture in the country. By the 1180s, when the original house was built, Southampton was already an important port. The house was on the quayside where ships loaded and unloaded their cargoes.
  • Southampton’s Old Town: Southampton is a thriving modern city but you don’t have to explore too far to discover its amazing past. Old Town today still contains a wealth of historical attractions – the Bargate, the medieval town walls, Gods House Tower and Tudor House and Garden are some of the many sites worth visiting. You can also walk the Jane Austen trail, the QE2 Mile, take a self guided walk around the Old Town or join one of the regular guided Heritage Walks.
