Description

Eling Tide Mill Experience is a historic attraction located in Totton near Southampton, centred around one of the UK’s last working tide mills. For over 900 years, millers have harnessed the power of the tides in Eling Creek to grind wheat into flour. Today, the restored Grade II listed mill, visitor centre, riverside walks and café combine history, nature and family activities in one scenic waterfront setting.

Visitors can watch the tide turn the great waterwheel and power the traditional millstones during weekend openings. The Visitor Centre and Discovery Room feature interactive exhibits, hands-on flour milling with querns and regular family activities in the Activity Room at selected times. You can also enjoy improved accessible boardwalks along Eling Creek, explore Goatee Beach and Eling Great Marsh, and relax with food and drinks at the on-site café.

Spring weekday tickets (Wednesday to Friday) for the Discovery Room cost £3.00 for adults (16+), £1.50 for children and £2.20 for concessions and seniors, with a family ticket (2 adults and up to 3 children) priced at £9.00. At weekends, entry to both the Tide Mill and Discovery Room costs £7.50 for adults, £4.50 for children and £5.75 for concessions and seniors, while a family ticket is £19.00.

Eling Tide Mill Experience offers a rare opportunity to see tidal power in action while learning about centuries of local industry. The mix of interactive displays, riverside walks and café facilities makes it suitable for families as well as heritage lovers. It is a peaceful yet educational day out that brings together engineering, history and nature in the heart of Hampshire.

Features

  • Tide Mill: The Mill is located on the seaward side of a dam across a tidal river. When the tide comes in, it pushes open one-way gates and fills up the millpond. When the tide turns and starts to go out again, it slowly uncovers the waterwheel, but the sea gates are closed, trapping the water in the millpond so the level in the millpond stays at the high tide level. When the tide has dropped to well below the waterwheel axle, the sluice gate can be raised.
  • Visitor Centre: The Visitor Centre opposite The Mill houses the Discovery Room where you can find more about the mill and its history and also get hands on with one of our interactive models, including hand querns to mill some flour. This forms part of the admission to the Eling Tide Mill Experience. You can also find the Activity Room, this multi purpose space is where we provide most of our family activities and events (at selected times).
  • Walks: All of our board walks underwent improvements to make them more accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Now that they are are complete, why not take a walk along the river and see if you can spot some of the local bird life and wildlife. A two mile stroll around Eling – starting at Eling Quay. This walk takes you past Eling Tide Mill, Eling Great Marsh, Goatee Beach, Eling Church, Bartley Reach and finishes at the Visitor centre and café.

Facilities

  • Parking: There is a free car park located on the opposite side of the toll bridge, by the cemetery and church.
  • Food & Drinks: Our café provides quality casual dining in a light spacious area within the same building as the visitor centre, opposite Eling Tide Mill.
