Volk’s Electric Railway is a historic seaside attraction running along Brighton’s beautiful seafront and is proudly known as the world’s oldest working electric railway. First opened in 1883, it offers visitors a unique chance to step back into the Victorian era while enjoying stunning coastal views. The railway is a much-loved family attraction and an important part of Britain’s seaside heritage. 

The mile-long line runs between Aquarium Station, Halfway Station, and Black Rock Station, each providing access to nearby attractions. Highlights along the route include Brighton Palace Pier, SEA LIFE Centre, children’s playgrounds, Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf, Yellowave Beach Sports Centre, Sea Lanes, and Brighton Marina. Facilities include the Milk Bar Café at Aquarium Station, serving coffee, pastries, sandwiches, and locally made ice cream, with both indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the beach. 

Full route ticket prices are £5.40 single / £7.00 return for adults, £3.40 / £4.40 for children (5–15), £4.00 / £5.40 for seniors (65+), and £13.10 / £17.90 for a family ticket (2 adults + 2 children). Halfway route tickets start at £3.40 single / £5.40 return for adults, with children from £2.40. Children aged 4 and under travel free, and local residents (BN1, BN2, BN3 & BN41) receive discounted return fares.

  • Aquarium Station: Welcome to our flagship station, also home to the railway’s visitor centre and the tantalizing Milk Bar Café. Positioned right on the beach and close to the heart of the city, Aquarium Station offers unparalleled convenience, with a mere 2-minute leisurely walk separating it from the iconic Brighton Palace Pier and famous Sea Life Centre.
  • Halfway Station: There’s lots to do around Halfway Station. Alight here for the children’s playground, café and Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf. A brief stroll will take you to the Yellowave Beach Sports Centre and Sea Lanes (for the National Open Water Swimming Centre).
  • Black Rock Station: Situated at the eastern end of our line, Black Rock Station offers convenient access to a variety of attractions. A leisurely 5-minute stroll will lead you to the vibrant Brighton Marina, teeming with shops, cafes, restaurants and cinema. Black Rock is also the nearest station to the start of the iconic undercliff walk, where you can embark on a memorable coastal journey towards Saltdean.
