Set against the beautiful backdrop of the South Downs, Washbrooks Family Farm has plenty to keep children entertained and engaged. With lots of traditional farm animals, outdoor adventure, and indoor play, there’s loads to see, climb, jump, and bounce on. Activities include exploring the Brook Walk, a chance to spot wildlife in its natural habitat and enjoy the scenery of the South Downs. Everyone is welcome at the friendly tearoom serving hot meals and sandwiches for adults and children, plus a range of hot and cold drinks available to eat in or take away. Alternatively, visitors may bring a picnic to relax outside while the children play. The family has been here since 1945, and the proposition remains as simple now as it was then: “Fresh Air and Fun.”

  • Outdoor Play
    • Climb, Swing, Slide and Balance: Unlimited access included within admission. Visit during the week, and enjoy time with toddler or pre-schoolers whilst bigger children are at school. Alternatively, join at the weekend with family and friends and make the most of the fresh air and have some fun at the farm.
    • Adventure Playground: If children like to climb, swing, slide and balance, there’s lots for them to enjoy including a zip wire, climbing frames, trampolines, balance bars, slides, swings and the pirate ship, the ‘Sheep Ahoy!’.
    • Jumping Pillows: Fantastic jumping pillows a smaller one for toddlers and the under 5’s and a huge one for bigger kids so there’s no excuse for not kicking off shoes and joining little ones as they bounce away.
    • Sandpit: The sandpit is always well-equipped with lots of buckets and spades so there’s no need to bring your own. Kids of all ages love making sandcastles! Bring a picnic blanket and relax whilst they play.
  • Pedal Area: Located just outside the indoor play, the paved area has plenty of ride-on tractors and scooters to enjoy. It’s the ideal place to let little farmers scoot around and exert some energy. It’s also covered so it’s great come rain or shine.
  • Indoor Play: Unlimited access included within admission and open all year round whatever the weather. Ideally suited to children under 8 years of age. Indoor play is not heated.
    • Designed for Children to Have Fun: A challenging environment for children to enjoy and let off steam, explore and have adventures.
    • Learn Through Play: Bursting with slides, a ball pit, climbing area. The bigger kids love loading up and firing the balls out of the ball cannon.
    • For Toddlers and Under 5’s: The Castle has little slides, a small ball pit and a miniature climbing area.
  • Animals: A variety of different animals and breeds to see.
    • Shire Horses: Gregory and Galaxy may be in the barn or grazing in the field.
    • Shetland Ponies: Cookie, Spot and Bashful.
    • Donkeys: Swampy and Jed are miniature donkeys. Jemima is mum to her naughty child Jade. Oakley and Fraser are American Mammoth donkeys and Hugo is a Poitou. Donkeys love to play with a wellington boot.
    • Dexter Cows: Some of the herd in the paddocks. Jess and Lucy are the ginger heifers, Nettie is the most friendly, and the Dexter Bull is called Tiny. The newest member of the Dexter family was born in June 2025.
    • Goats: About 15 goats on the farm including pygmy goats, a pair of Golden Guernsey’s and Nubians.
    • Pigs: Betty and Boo are pink pigs. Rocket and Nora are black pigs that spend most of their day sleeping. Once a year in July there is a litter of piglets. They live in the barn or pigsty outside under the pea green boat.
    • Sheep: A flock of polled Dorset sheep producing beautiful lambs at Easter. Blue Texel’s give birth in spring, plus one Soay (a rare breed) and Zwartble sheep including hand-reared Binky.
    • Alpaca: Baby the alpaca has lived at Washbrooks for many years. A huge welcome to the fab 4 alpacas Hamish, Hero, Hurricane and Hugo. Alpacas are renowned for exquisite fleece – incredibly soft, lightweight, flame and water resistant, and hypoallergenic.
    • Ducks: A lovely collection to view up close.
    • Geese: Noisy and certainly not shy.
    • Rabbits: Cute and cuddly rabbits to meet.
    • Guinea Pigs: Living happily with rabbits in the barn.
    • Turkeys: Seen in paddocks and outbuildings, with wattles hanging from their necks.
    • Chickens: A variety including the Sussex, believed to be first bred in Britain during the Roman invasion.
    • Peacocks: Members of the pheasant family, with males called peacocks and females penhens. A group is called a ‘party’.
    • Guinea Fowl: Comical birds with unique personalities, often watching their own reflection.
  • Friendly Family-Run Farm: The animal barn has been designed so that children of all ages can enjoy excellent views of the animals all year round in a safe and hygienic environment. If animals aren’t in the barn they may be grazing, playing or resting in the paddocks. Take the opportunity to wander around the paddocks with the stunning backdrop of the South Downs. Spot Wolstonbury Hill and other features of the South Downs Way including the northern slopes leading to Devil’s Dyke. Visitors are welcome to use a pushchair, though some of the stone paths around the paddocks are rugged with slight inclines.

    • From Crawley. Head south on the A23. Exit at Sayers Common B2118. Follow B2118 to the traffic lights. Turn left to Hurstpierpoint. At the mini roundabout turn right we are 100 yards down the road B2117 on the right.
