Situated in the heart of the Chiltern hills in the beautiful village of Great Missenden in Buckinghamshire, Gateway School is a co-educational, independent day school for children aged two to eleven. Its core belief is that education is not just about academic success; it is about building a foundation that gives each child the confidence and skills they need to be the best they can be now and in the future. For one this might be academic studies, for another sport, whilst another might find their forte in music. Preschool
Gateway Preschool gives children aged two to four years, and their parents, the best possible introduction to education and school - far more than just nursery childcare. Our experienced and caring team, including a qualified teacher, use carefully planned activities to create a nurturing, stimulating and playful environment, fostering independence and creativity in our young learners.
Juniors
During Gateway Junior Years, we focus on giving children the confidence to challenge themselves and take risks, encouraging them to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop important organisational skills. Class teachers deliver all core academic subjects so they are able to track each child’s development closely, and give support when necessary. The introduction of specialist lessons extends children’s natural curiosity and enthusiasm. In these years, we aim to help children develop a strong work ethic by helping them to recognise that achievement requires effort as well as ability.
Seniors
Gateway Senior Years are about encouraging an enduring love of learning, and offering children increasing levels of independence and responsibility so that each one leaves Gateway feeling prepared academically and socially for their next school, and knowing they have achieved their best. Teaching methods and personal timetables in Senior years are specifically designed to anticipate the academic demands children will face in secondary school. Seniors enjoy a curriculum delivered entirely by specialist teachers and make rapid academic progress to achieve good results in national tests.

Things to note
Clubs
They encourage the children to develop a wide range of interests to give them the best opportunity to discover and develop new abilities. Gateway offers a wide variety of clubs every day which usually take place either before or after school. After-School programme offers several clubs for each year group every school evening. Alternatively, children can choose to finish their homework in a quiet environment then relax with friends up until 6pm. This gives parents flexibility for collection, safe in the knowledge that their children are doing something fun and constructive.
Outdoor Learning
Forest School enables our children from Preschool to Year 2 to learn in a practical way whilst engaging with the natural world. Forest School helps our children develop independence and an ability to tackle physical problem solving challenges whilst keeping themselves safe. This hands on learning fosters engagement and social skills as well as developing self-esteem. We believe spending time outdoors helps to foster well being.
Music Tuition
Visiting music teachers offer individual instrumental tuition to many children on a weekly basis. Music lessons start at 8:30am and run through to 5:00pm. Children can begin individual music lessons in Year 4, although there are often vacancies for violin and cello in Year 3.
Extra Curricular
Creative Arts:
In Art and DT, teaching is carried out by specialist art teachers in well equipped rooms where pupils are encouraged to experiment and explore their own ideas whilst learning techniques and processes. Activities are often linked to classroom topics to enhance the pupils’ experiences. The Take One Picture project in the spring term provides a wonderful opportunity to bring the whole school together, across age phase and subjects.
From Reception to Year 2, Drama is incorporated into the curriculum and is taught by the class teacher; years 3 to 6 are taught by a specialist. In Drama we use a variety of teaching and learning skills, drawing attention to the use of the voice, movement, appraising and performance skills. Skill building exercises and improvisation enable the children to develop their use of verbal as well as non-verbal language, such as mime and facial expression.
In Music, all children take part in a balanced programme of musical skills where practical music making and composition are interwoven with listening. Some activities incorporate the Kodaly method, which aims to develop musicianship through singing. Performance plays a very important role in the curriculum with each year group participating in two productions during the year.
Sport & PE:
Here at Gateway we endeavour to ensure that every child leaves the school with the confidence and motivation to actively participate in some, or several forms of physical activity beyond their time in our care.
PE is taught from Early Years through to Year 6 with the emphasis placed on enjoying the active body and developing confidence in moving. Agility, balance and coordination are among the physical skills that are developed through PE but furthermore we seek to develop the whole child by cultivating cognitive, emotional and social skills in keeping with the overall ethos of the school.
We recognise that it can be hugely beneficial to take part in Sport as well as PE and Gateway pupils take part in a wide variety of sports such as football, rugby, netball, cricket and hockey. The style of teaching remains inclusive and teachers focus on the technical and tactical elements of sport, also paying attention to developing respect, scorekeeping, teamwork, resilience and competition.
