K.E.S. is a state-funded Academy Trust selective school for boys with a co-educational Sixth Form. The School, known to have been in existence from 1295 and re-founded by a Charter of King Edward VI, has a reputation for high academic standards and an outstanding co-curricular programme. The poet and playwright William Shakespeare attended the School in the 1570s, leading to our being widely known as Shakespeare's School. They pride ourselves on providing opportunities for our students to build on existing talents whilst developing new skills and interests. There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities on offer at lunchtime, after School, at the weekend, and in the holidays. Sport, Music and Drama are simply outstanding and rarely matched in either the State or Independent Sector. There is a major sporting fixtures programme, and regular concerts and drama productions are of the highest quality. First-class facilities and expert coaching ensure that sports teams and instrumental ensembles frequently enjoy success in national and international competitions. Each year, as part of the extra-curricular programme, our students are able to participate in a variety of overseas tours and expeditions. All who join K.E.S. are expected and encouraged to play a full part in this rich School life.
Curriculum
They aim to provide an ambitious, innovative and stimulating curriculum for all. High academic attainment and the development of widely-educated, confident and responsible young people are the twin aims of the curriculum. It is tailored to be academically challenging for the able cohorts of students, the vast majority of whom study A Levels before beginning university degrees or degree-level apprenticeships. The students follow a balanced academic curriculum with the English Baccalaureate at its heart. They prioritise student choice to give each individual the opportunity to proceed to destinations that meet their interests and aspirations. This results in a broad curriculum and smaller examination set sizes than is typical in state schools nationally. They curriculum aims to prepare students for a rapidly changing world whilst understanding and learning the best that has been thought, said and written. They promote and recognise success in a wide range of extra-curricular activities to enable students to discover and develop lifelong interests and talents. This rich set of experiences develops students’ strength of character and enables them to become empathetic, resilient and independent.

Clubs and Societies
They have a varied and extensive list of Clubs and Societies. As well as those offered by staff that have a particular interest or expertise in a certain area we aim to accommodate requests from our students. The philosophy is quite simple; any proposal for an activity will be considered without prejudice and if it is deemed to be appropriate, they will do what they can to support it.In the past, students have approached us to provide support for activities such as Table Tennis, Badminton, Warhammer and Debating. All of these clubs now run as successful entities in their own right. Some activities are run by Sixth Form volunteers.
