Teaching at Barrow Hills is based on the understanding that children vary in academic ability, learn and mature at different rates and discover areas of the curriculum which they enjoy and excel at. The family feel of the School is evident and the children clearly benefit from being members of a small community. The class sizes allow for more individual attention from staff, who value and understand every child and spend quality time with them to enhance their learning and confidence. The intimate atmosphere is a particular strength of the School and enables them to build warm relationships with our families.Education at Barrow Hills is for life, not just the classroom and they are committed to being leaders in Prep School education; promoting mutual respect, curiosity of mind and independence of spirit, preparing each child to move on to take their place in an ever changing world.

Facilities

Nursery
It is important to them that a child’s first experience of school life is caring and fun. It is widely recognised that playing is fundamental to a child’s learning. The Nursery children develop new skills by choosing to play alongside or with their peers in the calm, warm environment of their bright, well-equipped classroom and covered outside area. The experienced staff guide them in their learning and provide a range of engaging activities. Every child is encouraged to be independent and to share in child-led play and learning. If a Nursery child stays to lunch they are able to enjoy a hot meal with staff on hand to help.

Pre-Prep
A six year old gazes at the ground, stoops, then reaches down between their muddy wellies to discover a fossil which has lain hidden for millions of years. Their curiosity is ignited, their questions are welcomed and their enthusiasm encouraged. Our youngest children have a flexible school day. Some children begin with just a couple of mornings, whilst for others with working parents they start each day at 07.45am with Breakfast Club (available for children from Kindy – Year 8) and end the day at After-School Club.

Prep
Children in Years 3 and 4, our Junior Prep, begin to discover their talents and it is important, therefore, that we recognise this and nurture their development. Music, drama, art, DT, games and Forest School feature in a broad and stimulating curriculum. We have a significant intake of children into Year 3 from local primary schools. New children are warmly welcomed by their peers and quickly settle into the wide and varied school day. We are experts at helping children adapt to the changes they face and build resilience to do so.

Things to note

Art
Art has been known as the fun subject in the school curriculum for many years. It is the one subject where you can get covered in paint and not told off for doing it (so long as you are wearing an apron!).At Barrow Hills, we believe it is important to capture and maintain this fun while forming a strong foundation of artistic skills. These skills are not confined to drawing and painting. In addition, we offer ceramics, textiles, print-making, animation, photography, film making and sculpture.

Drama
At Barrow Hills they believe that drama is a vitally important part of our school curriculum.  From Nursery right through to Year 8 they are passionate about creating an atmosphere in which all children enjoy drama. Here at Barrow Hills drama is not just about performing, although it is important to us that all our children get their chance to shine on the school stage!

Music
At Barrow Hills, the music department aims to provide the very best musical education and enthuse children of all ages and abilities to realise their potential.Children have one lesson of music per week, from the earliest days of Nursery, when the children learn simple songs and play percussion instruments, through to Year 8 where the children study the musical elements of improvisation and melodic composition. The curriculum is engaging and stimulating and covers a wide breadth of genres.

Sport
The one thing all sportsmen and women share around the world is packing their kit bag. Chris Robshaw will pack his own kit bag, our games teachers will pack their own and even Prince Harry will pack his the night before a match. For many, having the correct kit can make or break their performance. However, one thing remains constant for us all during the ups and downs of our sporting endeavours; a love of our chosen game.

Activities & Clubs
At Barrow Hills, there are a number of external clubs and activities that children (and parents) can attend if they wish. These are hosted at Barrow Hills, but run by external suppliers; they are paid for separately and directly to the relevant coach/teacher (unless specified otherwise). These events are usually at a time outside of normal school hours and while they do not detract from the regular education that your children receive they do teach new skills that can help children in all sorts of areas of their learning
