Bedales School is a co-educational, boarding and day independent school in the village of Steep, near the market town of Petersfield in Hampshire, England.
The major sports are hockey, tennis, netball and football. These are complemented by a strong focus on swimming throughout the year, with both rugby and basketball taking place during the spring term and athletics, tennis and rounders in the summer. There are also opportunities to experience a wide range of sports during the PE curriculum, such as gymnastics, badminton and lacrosse to name a few.
The Activities programme is open to all students, who can choose from a wide range of cerebral, social and physical activities under the loose banners of ‘head, hand and heart’ to further an existing interest, try something new or give back to the community. This could include progressing the various sections for the Duke of Edinburgh Award with each level - Bronze, Silver and Gold - supported by a specific teacher.
Academic societies allow students to develop their interests, exchange ideas and engage in debate beyond the classroom. From maths to poetry and everything in between, students can either join an existing society or start their own. Find out more about Academic Societies here.
The voluntary local service scheme might involve students helping younger children with reading at a local primary school or making a weekly commitment volunteering at a charity. They are constantly refreshing our programme of international volunteering and exchanges to make the most of new opportunities. Recent trips have included Africa, the US and India.

Personal development is central to the concept of scholarship and approach aims to align scholarship beneficiaries more closely with the school’s aim “to develop inquisitive thinkers with a love of learning who cherish independent thought”. This scheme is for pupils (both internal and external) with particular talents in Art, Design, Music, Drama, Sport and other academic subjects to encourage their appetite for research, enquiry and development. Scholarship holders have access to a research fund to support their individual scholarly projects. There is no reduction in school fees – research grants are non means-tested and hence have a relatively small financial value - £500/year. The value can be rolled together for a maximum of two years for any un-spent allocation, and should be approved by the 31 July of the second year (eg. a contribution of £1,000 could be made for a summer course based on two years of scholarship). The award of a scholarship is reviewed annually based on student performance.
