Beech Hall is a non-selective independent school for boys and girls aged 6 months to 16 years. Situated in a beautiful sixteen-acre site on the edge of the Peak District, housing two listed buildings, playing fields and swimming pool, they are proud to be able to provide a truly child-centred approach to education.Small classes and a focus on the individual child mean that quality teaching and learning lead to success. However, they believe, opportunities beyond the curriculum are just as important as those in the classroom as they seek to provide a truly unique curriculum for every child.A balanced focus on academic attainment, sporting opportunities, emphasising individual strengths and celebrating traditional values are at the core of everything that is important to us at Beech Hall.

Beech Hall Nursery
The Nursery aims to give children the best possible start to their education. The children follow the Early Years Foundation stage from birth to 5 years. They are encouraged to develop at their own pace in a caring, supportive atmosphere. Play is adult or child-led and helps children to get to grips with the fundamentals. When they are ready the children are introduced to counting and number work. They may start reading and writing. French and music are introduced and taught by School specialists. The pre-school children join the reception class three afternoons a week and enjoy the expertise of a qualified teacher, helping the transition to school.Beech Hall Nursery has two named SENCO’s (Special Educational Needs coordinators) who are the Early Years Professionals. The role of the SENCO is to provide support for the children with special educational needs. There is a named Safeguarding of Children Coordinator ( SoCCO) whose role is to provide advice in the safeguarding of the children.
Infant & Junior School Curriculum
Building on the experiences and foundations laid in Beech Hall Nursery, the children naturally make the transition to Beech Hall Infant School. The small classes provide a high level of individual care and attention. The children in our Infant and Junior sections benefit from a broad curriculum. The importance of reading, writing and mathematics is stressed and these are taught by the child’s form teacher who is also responsible for the excellent pastoral care that our children receive. In addition, pupils benefit from specialist teaching in Science, IT, Music, Physical Education, French and Art. Beech Hall children are encouraged to take an interest in and develop an awareness of, the world around them together with the development of their creative and physical skills.
Senior School Curriculum
At Key Stage 3 (ages 11 – 14) pupils study the following subjects: English, Maths, Science, French, German, Art, Design Technology, ICT, Drama, Music, PE, Geography, History, RE, PHSE/Citizenship. At the end of Year 9 pupils usually choose nine or ten of these subjects to study at GCSE. In Science they are able to offer individual sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) or the Dual Award.

Sport
Beech Hall School has a long and proud history of sporting achievement with specialist teachers and coaches delivering the PE and games lessons. The school plays all the major team sports: for the boys that is Football, Rugby and Cricket and for the girls Netball, Hockey and Rounders. The pupils also have the opportunity to represent the school in sporting activities such as Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming.Sport underpins our extra curriculum programme where the pupils are given the chance to practice and develop their skills and techniques in the sports named above; however, they also have the opportunity to experience sports and activities such as Badminton, Tennis and Judo.
Drama and Music
Music is taught throughout the school from Pre-school to GCSE. All pupils are taught with an emphasis on practical music-making, focusing on the four principal areas of listening, singing, playing instruments and composing for both voices and instruments. At Pre-school, we start with keeping a beat, singing songs and adding simple accompaniments. Throughout the Infants, there is an emphasis on teaching musical contrasts such as high and low, loud and quiet, in order to introduce the seven elements of music (pitch, duration, dynamics, etc). They are also taught basic notation. As pupils move into the Juniors, the complexity of the music they can appreciate and create increases and the work becomes more sophisticated, with pupils adding layers to their music, experimenting with timbre and starting to think about what they are trying to create and how effectively they have achieved this
Art and Design
The Art and Design department is concerned with the visual and tactile senses, enabling a pupil to communicate their ideas and demonstrate self-expression. The art studio is a busy and vibrant environment where all pupils are encouraged to make an imaginative response about what they see, feel and think. Pupils are inspired to observe and interpret the world in which they exist creating curiosity and self-confidence within the subject.All pupils in the Infants, Juniors and Seniors are taught in a specialised art studio fostering continuity and enthusiasm for the subject from a very young age. The children develop their artistic skills through a wide range of materials and techniques such as drawing, painting, textiles, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and ICT. Schemes of work are designed to encourage the pupils creative, technical and personal development
