Brockhurst and Marlston House Schools

Description

Brockhurst and Marlston House Schools is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 3 to 13 (Gender - 3 to 13 )

Choosing a school is not easy and no prospectus can adequately convey its quality and atmosphere. However, they hope this website will give you a feel for our ethos and the breadth of education at Brockhurst and Marlston House Schools. They are essentially family schools and have been in existence for over a hundred and thirty years. The model of education aims to combine the best features of the single sex and co-educational systems and offers you a unique choice of education which we believe best enables boys and girls to achieve their potential and to develop their self-confidence.

Facilities

Nursery
The extended 51 weeks a year nursery is an exciting new development at Brockhurst and Marlston House schools.  It is set within the unique environment of woodland and open space which lends itself to the strong belief that outdoor learning is an integral part to laying the foundations for a holistic learning journey supported by excellent pastoral care. The newly created nursery opens onto a beautiful, sunny enclosed playground full of adventure and which includes the very own hobbit house.  Immediately adjacent to the garden are outstanding facilities including our sports hall, astro pitch, swimming pool and music school all of which the nursery children use with specialist teachers every week.  In addition, there is dedicated parking next to the nursery for the convenience of parents.

Foundation Stage
In the Early Years Foundation Stage we recognise that every child is unique. The Nursery and Reception pride themselves by providing a playful, safe, happy stimulating environment enabling our children to flourish both socially and academically. Children in the early years are constantly learning and are developing resilience and confidence. Children develop important life skills such as curiosity, creativity, persistence, independence, imagination and resourcefulness. All our children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which is tailored to suit every child’s learning needs and abilities. Our curriculum and experienced staff scaffold and enhance children’s learning and abilities so that they can reach their full potential. The school day is full of exciting opportunities where children learn through a mixture of play, child initiated and teacher led activities.

Year 1
In Year One, the days begin to get a little more formal as the children become more independent with their learning. We teach the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and the Humanities, alongside a wide range of specialist subjects, including Music, PE and French. The latter are taught by specialist teachers from the senior school. The children also benefit from weekly swimming lessons and our fun and exciting “Tree Top Thursday”.

Year 2
In this year the children progress to more specialist subject teaching and their first taste of team sport.  The children love to feel part of the Prep school and wear the senior school uniform and attend senior assemblies twice a week.  In this way they make a seamless transition from Pre-Prep to Prep. The timetable focus is on literacy and numeracy with a generous allocation to other subjects and sport every day.

Features

Things to note

CO-CURRICULAR
There are many optional extra activities such as Speech and Drama, Judo, Ballet, Chess, Tennis, Yoga, extra swimming and horse riding, which are taught by specialists. Many pupils start learning individual instruments and there are recorder and violin fun groups available which allow children to try out and explore different instruments before committing.  Broad use is made of the schools’ outstanding facilities.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES PROGRAMME
The Extracurricular Activities Programme open to the pupils is very broad and we consider it to be a key part of an all-round education. Many activities are organised on-site taking full advantage of the School’s large estate. Unlike many schools, the timetable is constructed to ensure they are not restricted by it in their choices.Pupils are encouraged to try lots of different activities and to develop as broad a range of interests as possible. The activities programme helps them learn to socialise and become independent. Their sense of wonder and enquiry is stimulated and their enthusiasm and confidence in having a go at new things is fostered.  Having a broad range of interests also helps children in gaining entry to Senior schools.
