Alder Bridge School is Independent Primary school in West Berkshire for kids aged 3 to 12 (Gender - Mixed )
At all ages, children at Alder Bridge are encouraged to be curious and given space to explore new ideas. By engaging head, heart and hands, pupils develop a deep understanding of their subjects. This results in a positive learning experience which leads to a greater sense of self-esteem.Alder Bridge was established in 1987 and is a full member of the Steiner-Waldorf School Fellowship and follows the code of practice developed by that body. They form part of an international movement with over 1,000 schools worldwide, SWS's form the largest group of independent, non-denominational schools in the world.Over 100 years of Steiner-Waldorf education has taught us that learning occurs most efficiently within a community. Parents and friends of the school have ample opportunity to be involved within the school and to bring together their talents.Seasonal festivals play a big part in our shared experience, as do regular workdays, fundraising and outreach events. Everyone plays their part, contributing skills, time and enthusiasm taking part in our woodland activities, building projects, craft making, and caring for our school. It is in these special moments of actively working together, children can deeply experience what can be achieved when people come together in a shared sense of purpose.
Kindergarten
At 3 years old children become increasingly interested in exploring the world with other children. They start to play 'with' rather than 'alongside' their friends, and Kindergarten is a gentle first step out into the world beyond home. Download our Kindergarten Curriculum Policy here.Imaginative play is the 'work' of childhood and this activity begins every morning as the children arrive for Kindergarten. The children take inspiration from their surroundings and their experiences in order to initiate games using wooden blocks and planks, softly coloured cloths and pegs, pine cones, conkers and other simple toys to create the scene.
Classes 1 to 8
Class 1-8 is a learning journey that is filled with beauty, wonder and understanding, experienced together with the Class Teacher who accompanies them throughout these years.Teachers provide strong pastoral support where pupils are guided in these 8 years in a safe, caring, active learning environment crafted by their teacher. A majority of the work that is presented to the child has been created by the teacher. This is why Steiner-Waldorf pedagogy is known as the ‘Art of Education’, this work is created by the teachers and pupils with dedication and with much attention to detail and beauty. Experience shows us that when our pupils are involved in their work when they are happy, this motivates them to want to learn and to perform to their true potential.
Parent and Child Group
The Parent and Child groups are the perfect gentle introduction to Steiner education and a great way to meet other families during the magical first years of your child's life. Both friendly and informative, these groups are for parents and carers of children aged 0-3 or 4 years old, depending on kindergarten readiness, and are held both outdoors in our beautiful woodland and indoors in the light-filled Willow Room. They offer natural play, a craft activity, seasonal ring-time with songs and nursery rhymes, and a healthy organic snack which helps to leave you and your child feeling nourished and relaxed.Children in the sessions are not over-stimulated and are allowed to explore, play and develop at their own unique pace in the way nature intended.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) at Alder Bridge School
At Alder Bridge School we provide a caring, positive and supportive learning environment for all children. School staff know their pupils well and understand their individual needs; they cater to these accordingly. All children within the school have access to high-quality teaching from both their Kindergarten/Class Teacher and Subject Teachers. To complement this in the Lower School, they provide small group sessions and one-to-one interventions, led by qualified and trained Teaching Assistants (these are allocated according to the severity of need and there may be a waiting list at times). They also provide whole class Teaching Assistant support during Main lessons and subject lessons for some of the classes.
