Carrdus School is Independent Primary school in West Northamptonshire for kids aged 2 to 11 (Gender - Mixed )
Welcome to Carrdus School. They are a day prep school for girls and boys aged 3 - 11, just outside Banbury on the borders of Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire and Warwickshire. We are a small and friendly country school owned by Tudor Hall School. We offer academic rigour with adventure and imagination at our heart and our aim is is to give every child a really happy and confident start to school life. They are a school where children can be children. By focusing on the individual and enabling them to follow their Carrdus Pathway, every child can flourish and grow at their own pace. Strong, supportive relationships are built with all our boys and girls, helping them to develop to their full potential both personally and academically. As a result our children quickly become independent, confident and resilient individuals; happy to have a go and do their best. They are imaginative, aspirational and empathetic; getting on easily with those around them and sensitive to their differing needs.
Nursery
Nursery is a warm, friendly space that opens onto its own secure garden enclosed within our grounds so that Nursery children can learn and play in their own outdoor classroom as well as mix with the older children during break times. No day in Nursery is the same. Before they know it children are experimenting with letter sounds, making marks in sand for their first writing, collaborating in groups on the floor or listening to how something can be made before making it. They are soon running out to the garden for some practical Science activity or into the Gym or swimming pool for lessons with specialist teachers. Nursery children rapidly gain confidence, relax into the school routine and are more than ready for the move into Reception after the summer holidays.
Reception
The Reception class is a big, bright room opening on to its own secure and enclosed garden. Nearly all of our Nursery children carry on into Reception and are joined by other newcomers. They all quickly settle in the cheerful atmosphere. In Reception, children consolidate the letters and sounds begun in Nursery and get their first phonically decodeable reading books. Parents are encouraged to read with their children daily as this important practice helps the children to make quick progress. Number work is integral to every activity, first up to 10 and then 20: we sing, sort, count, share, so that numbers are in the hand and the head right from the start.
Years 1 and 2
Year 1 is a time of rapid development, building on the strong foundations laid in Nursery and Reception. Children become much more confident in their reading and enjoy a widening range of phonically decodeable books. Handwriting is taught alongside phonics and is developing quickly; much of it is joined. Children start to work more independently, to be individually creative, to make connections between home and school and to become fully involved in every subject. Plenty of practical Science, Design and Technology, Computing and Maths activities, including problem solving, are needed at this most imaginative age.
Years 3 and 4
In Years 3 and 4 there is a big push on reading comprehension and fluency and children’s writing and maths skills develop very quickly. With strong basic skills in place the children can really make the most of all the other subjects on offer. Through our flexible and creative curriculum children are able to immerse themselves in fun and engaging topics. We look for more independent learning and self-organisation. There is plenty of practical work, questioning and formulating of experiments and an appreciation of current affairs is encouraged.
Years 5 and 6
Year 5 is an important year, when the children are prepared for the entrance exams to their senior schools. They have the same Maths and English teachers for Year 5 and 6, helping them to be fully prepared for these assessments that take place generally in the first term of Year 6.
Sport
Sport is a huge part of life at Carrdus for all our children and we offer a wide and varied PE curriculum along with numerous sports clubs before, during and after school. This represents much more than a list of activities, and gives our children opportunities to develop and hone skills, enjoy being part of a team, keep fit and learn to both win and lose gracefully. Trying to master new skills and not being afraid of failure is key to the sporting life at Carrdus.
The Arts
Music plays an important role in our curriculum and is taught by specialist teachers. During class music lessons, children learn to develop their vocal and instrumental skills whilst also nurturing an appreciation for different types of music. Over 70% of children have individual instrumental and singing lessons, and the majority of children participate in our junior and senior choirs as well as various ensembles.
Outdoor Learning
The outdoor space, including our outdoor classroom, allows us to unlock the potential in every child, allowing them to not only climb trees and get muddy at break, but also gain vital skills through the outdoor timetable. Learning in a multisensory environment supports problem-solving skills, nurtures creativity and provides rich opportunities for developing our children’s imagination, inventiveness and resourcefulness
Learning Support
The Head of Learning Support, who is a fully qualified specialist, has responsibility for the co-ordination of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities provision throughout the school, including the Early Years Foundation Stage, and works closely with staff, parents and other agencies.
