PRE-PREP (AGES 3 TO 7)
The Pre-Prep area of School warmly welcomes children aged 3 (when they join Pre-School), into Reception and through to the end of Year 2, when they have turned 7. The dedicated staff and creative environment help to ensure every child in our care develops the essential learning characteristics to support them throughout their lives. The most recent Independent Schools Inspectorate report rated the School as excellent (the highest level possible) for the quality of both pupils' academic education and personal development. They are proud of the learning opportunities they provide for the youngest pupils, ones that develop not only knowledge but the aptitude to question, problem solve, communicate and to understand that failure is part of the path to success.
PREP
Sedbergh Prep School develops happy, confident children with a ‘can-do’ attitude; independent yet always with a sense of team before self. Through careful and sensitive teaching, they aim to foster a spirit of adventure, both inside and outside the classroom. The curriculum is ambitious and equips pupils with the necessary skills for future success, yet is delivered in a setting of timeless beauty where pupils have the space and time to enjoy their childhood. Our Ways of the Wolf describe the core values that shape our behaviour: ambition, collaboration, courage, creativity, kindness, and responsibility. A keen sense of community and heritage is shared throughout the School, both amongst boarders and day pupils. Pupils moving into the Senior School are made ready for the next chapter, though all our pupils leave their mark on the world, wherever that may be.
Sports
Sedbergh is renowned for its top level achievement in a wide variety of sports, with boys and girls featuring prominently in national and international teams – and the School boasts 35 capped alumni in its ranks. The foundation for this achievement is built at the Prep School. The recipe for success is simple. We play sport at least five days a week, and all pupils have top class coaching regardless of their ability, with an emphasis on fun as well as achievement. For pupils aged 9-13, we also organise extremely popular residential Sports Academies for rugby, cricket, netball and hockey during the school holidays, which are run by professional coaches and staff. We strive to produce achievers, spirited young people with a professional attitude towards personal performance and team responsibility. Competition is taken seriously, and boys and girls participate regularly in regional, national and international competitions and tours.
Activities
The extra-curricular activities programme is aimed at fostering pupils' confidence, independence and breadth of interest both in individuals as well as within the framework of a team. Great emphasis is placed on developing the whole child, making sure there is a balance in their activities and giving them key life skills in resilience, perseverance and self-confidence.All our pupils find the activities on offer an enjoyable way of self-discovery - hidden skills often come to light, and they gain a real sense of achievement in learning something new. It is also great fun and an excellent way to further enhance friendships across year groups, teamwork and leadership skills. The activities provide pupils with the opportunity to try new experiences and learn new skills which they will hopefully go on to pursue, giving them additional variety in their education.
Music
Music is a gift to mankind which is to be enjoyed. The aim is to encourage and nurture this enjoyment in our pupils through all facets of the subject: creativity and composition, listening and analysis, movement and dance, instrumental and rhythmic skills, aural development, singing, solo and ensemble performance activities and score reading. At Sedbergh Prep they recognise the profound impact that music can have on a child’s development and the unique way that it interweaves with all subjects within school. Musical performance is encouraged, nurtured and promoted through singing (both solo and communal) and through the playing of musical instruments
Drama
A flourishing arts curriculum at Sedbergh Preparatory School enables pupils to enjoy drama as a subject in its own right, and as a learning medium across the curriculum. Drama is a vital element of pupils’ entitlement to a balanced Arts Education.Drama is taught progressively through and across each key stage, building upon previous learning and covers: Making: encompasses the many processes and activities employed when exploring, devising, shaping and interpreting drama. Performing: covers the skills and knowledge displayed when enacting, presenting and producing dramas, including the use of theatre technology. Responding: incorporates reflecting on both emotional and intellectual reactions to the drama. This reflection is deepened as pupils gain a knowledge and understanding of how drama is created.
