Chesham Preparatory School

Description

Chesham Prep is a unique place and has a well-deserved reputation, dating back to its foundation in 1938, for being a friendly, family-orientated school at the heart of the local community.  Set in the Bucks countryside, it is a caring and nurturing community where the children aim high, work hard and achieve great things.

They are dedicated to delivering an outstanding education for all our pupils: through small class sizes, the passionate and dedicated staff and, of course, the specialist facilities which children have access to from a young age.  There are shared expectations for striving towards academic excellence and pupils go on to record highly impressive results in tests and exams for entry into senior schools; both  Bucks Grammar Schools and excellent senior independent schools.

Facilities

Pre Prep
The early years of school are unique in so many ways. It is vitally important that during this time a child fosters a love of learning, an inquisitive mind and a sense of self-worth. At Chesham Prep we believe simply, that a happy child will learn and therefore reach their full potential. The Early Years Department is a happy, friendly and welcoming place. They pride ourselves on developing very close relationships with both the children and their families. The children enjoy a variety of activities together as a whole department such as the Christmas Nativity play, school trips, visits and other celebrations. They also join the Junior school for assemblies and Harvest festival. The children also have the pleasure of getting to know some of the senior school children as children in years 7 and 8 are assigned as helpers and spend weekly timetabled sessions with the children.

Junior School
The Junior School is comprised of Years 1 to 4 that cover Key Stage One and the first two years of Key Stage Two. Experience has shown them that the step up from Year 2 to Year 3 can be a challenging one and by the creation of a Junior School where there is a much closer working relationship with staff and children many problems disappear and the transition between these two key stages is a smooth one. Having completed Reception the children step on from the Foundation Stage and they at Chesham Preparatory School are confident that the children have in place the foundations of learning to ensure a successful journey where they can build skills and concepts on what they have already learnt.

Senior School
Chesham Prep has always combined a friendly, family atmosphere with a top-quality, broad-based education for pupils aged 3-13. We teach children to be forward thinking, adaptable, and independent and they grow into confident individuals with excellent social skills, with a strong moral awareness and a good understanding of core values. They aim to equip them with the skills and experiences with which to discover and develop their talents, allowing them the greatest range of options for their futures.Happy children thrive. At Chesham Prep the staff will encourage every pupil not only to meet his or her potential but also to exceed it. Life in the Senior School provides exciting opportunities for pupils to develop positive patterns of learning at an influential time in their development. The broad curriculum and wide range of extra-curricular activities will motivate and develop a love of learning and encourage your child to be curious and try new experiences. They will learn how to question, to think for themselves, and to work successfully with others and be proud of their own and others success.

Sport forms an important part of life at Chesham Prep School. From Nursery all of our children get to experience a wide variety of different sporting activities through PE and games lessons as well as in a wide variety of clubs. The ethos of the sports department is very much one that every child be given the opportunity to develop their potential to the very best of their abilities. With this in mind, the children receive coaching from experienced teachers, each with their own fields of expertise. All children get the opportunity to play in competitive matches, through fixtures against other schools from Year 3 and during the House competitions.

Art
Art is presented in a lively and interesting way throughout the school, the emphasis being on learning through fun, discovery and an increasing use of knowledge and skills. The Art syllabus provides a broad range of opportunities where each year group investigate and/or are taught the following elements: Drawing, Painting, Collage/Textiles, 3D/Clay/Modelling/Sculpture

Music
At CPS, they aim to provide every child with the opportunity to discover music for themselves, to explore diverse musical worlds and to embark upon their own individual journey in ways which are appropriate and stimulating.Instrumental players are invited to participate in the school orchestra after approximately one year’s tuition or after their grade 1 examination should they choose the examination route. All are welcome whether they receive tuition in or out of the school setting. The orchestra work together each week after school on a varied repertoire of material arranged and differentiated to cater for the individual needs and level of the players.
