Clayesmore Prep is a small, nurturing school with a warm, family feel that is ambitious in every way for all our pupils. The weeks are packed and varied, with all the academic rigour you would expect which is complemented with creativity, music, sport and forest school. They love the outdoors and encourage learning outside in the green surroundings as much as possible.
There is a strong academic core ensuring progression throughout the prep school, underpinned by our school’s innovative approach to attitudes to learning. Children follow an adapted national curriculum with a strong emphasis on the monitoring of pupil progress and attainment in all subjects. The Common Entrance syllabus is followed for our Year 7 and 8 pupils in English, maths and science. In addition to their weekly computing lesson, children have an opportunity to harness their ICT skills across the curriculum. These opportunities include data-logging in maths and science, 3D design in design and technology, developing online safety awareness and enhancing their learning through cloud computing.
Getting Outdoors
Getting children outside, into the fresh air, is at the core of the ethos at Clayesmore Prep. They believe children thrive mentally, physically and socially when they have enough time to run and play in nature, no matter what age they are.They have built a magnificent outdoor classroom by the lake to enable children to learn in a natural environment, they have extended the break times to allow more time for outside play and we are ensuring outdoor education, forest school, bushcraft, sport and LEX increasingly form part of the curriculum.
Sport and Wellbeing
Clayesmore pupils participate in a wide range of sports which, for boys, include football, rugby, hockey, tennis, athletics, swimming and cross country. Girls participate in hockey, cricket, netball, swimming, athletics, cross country and tennis. They are also now encouraged to try football and rugby in the younger years. They also have a mountain bike track, squash courts and a dance and gymnastics studio in the school sports centre. Children also compete at a high level in equestrian sports and skiing.
Music
Music can be heard almost every hour of the day at Clayesmore Prep so if your child has any instinct for music we will develop it! There are orchestras, choirs, jazz bands, and chamber music groups. Over 70% of pupils learn a musical instrument, and every year there will be children gaining Grade 6 and above in their music exams. Tuition is available on almost all instruments, even the bagpipes!
