Hanford School

Child Okeford, Blandford Forum DT11, United Kingdom
7-13 Years

Description

Hanford School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 7 to 13 (Gender - 7 to 13 )

Hanford is an all girls boarding and day prep school set in glorious Dorset countryside where girls are encouraged to find new interests and pursue their passions. Year on year they achieve impressive scholarship results both in the classroom and on the pitches. The purpose is to enable both girls and staff to live fulfilling, happy and varied lives by means of an inspiring and adventurous education.Hanford girls make dens, climb trees and, in the summer, ride before breakfast. They make their own clothes and develop as free spirits. They learn resilience, confidence and a sense of adventure and they develop friendships which will last a lifetime. They also learn to work hard which is why Hanford achieves excellent academic results: over the past 8 years girls have been offered in excess of 80 scholarship or exhibition awards and we have a number of Old Hanford girls currently studying at Oxford or Cambridge. While many join us in the IIIrd Form (years 3 and 4), they are happy to be joined by girls at any stage. They have a mix of boarding and day children: day girls have their own bed alongside boarders and have considerable flexibility as to when they may stay overnight; as a result they are able to be very much involved in everything that goes on at Hanford.

CHARACTER CURRICULUM
The aim of the character curriculum is to provide the girls with the tools they need to build up their intellectual and emotional character. They believe we fulfil the aims of the school very well but recognise that as educators we must constantly review the curriculum.  They are always looking at ways to improve the character of our education in a forever changing world.

ACADEMIC
Teaching at Hanford covers so much more than the National Curriculum. They are more greenhouse than hothouse looking to bring out the best in each individual girl. They offer an enlightened education which results in outstanding academic performance as evidenced in year on year Scholarships for the past 27 years: academic, art, drama, sport, all-round.

CREATIVITY
Creativity, Art, Pottery and Handwork are an essential part of life at Hanford. We believe every child is creative and aim to find what inspires them through a lively stimulating creative environment. We expose them to a variety of different creative disciplines and media including: pottery, drawing, printmaking, wire, papier maché, plaster and textiles.

ENGLISH, DRAMA & LITERACY
They aim to foster a life-long love of language and literature in all its forms through reading, writing, speaking, performing and listening. They strive to create a happy, purposeful literary environment where each child is nurtured and encouraged to find the stories, books and authors she loves. We invite authors in to talk to the girls and organised a week long Literacy Festival in the summer of 2017.

Things to note

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES
Hanford girls like to be busy, sometimes lost in their own imaginations and at other times learning a new skill or activity.  During the school week and at weekends, we offer a wide range of activities, some of which are included in the school fees and some of which are paid extras.

GROUNDS AND GARDENING
Hanford is fortunate to have a working kitchen garden and a walled garden in the grounds. Fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden supply the on-site school kitchen where the cooks use our home grown fruit and vegetables to make soups, salads, puddings. The famous Hanford lemons grown in one of our greenhouses are used in cakes, marmalades and other recipes. Both of these gardens are nearly 2 acres in size and therefore big enough to enable our girls to have their own plots to plant and manage.

DRAMA AND DANCE
Learning the performing arts such as drama and dance teaches girls to grow in confidence, find their creative voice and learn to see the world from another’s point of view. The characterful buildings and grounds of Hanford provide an inspiring backdrop for various plays and productions throughout the year. Each girl has the opportunity to ‘tread the boards’ during her time at Hanford as there are plenty of productions to take part in each year.

SINGING AND INSTRUMENTS
Girls can chose from a myriad of instruments at Hanford.  Music is part of everyday life at Hanford be it singing in Chapel in the morning or joining the orchestra. None of this would happen without the infectious enthusiasm and passion of the girls for singing and the wonderful bank of peripatetic music teachers who work with the music department at Hanford.
