Dorset House School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 4 to 13 (Gender - 4 to 13 )
Dorset House is proud to be the oldest private prep school in West Sussex and indeed, one of the oldest in the country and they can trace our roots back to the 18th century. The 2018 ISI Inspection found that, ‘The quality of the pupils’ academic and other achievements is excellent’ and ‘The quality of the pupils’ personal development is excellent’.The school moved to its current site on the banks of the River Arun, in West Sussex – right in the heart of the South Downs National Park over 50 years ago and children can enjoy the wonderful setting with boarding and dining in The Manor whilst being taught in modern, purpose built classrooms.
PRE-PREP SCHOOL
The Pre-Prep is a place of laughter and excitement. We strive to inspire our pupils to develop a love of learning through teaching that is stimulating, creative and challenging. They make the most of our idyllic location, nestled in woodland and on the banks of the River Arun, through outdoor learning and Forest School. They have excellent teachers and support staff who work together to assess the children’s progress and development.Dorset House prides itself on being one big family. The children in the Pre-Prep regularly spend their morning break times playing with older children in the woods. It is not uncommon to find football matches taking place where the players range in age from 5 to 13! The Pre-Prep mix together for various occasions throughout the year such as at Christmas and for Pre-Prep Science and Maths mornings. They have Pre-Prep assemblies once a week where we promote friendship, respect and tolerance of others.
PREP SCHOOL
They encourage pupils to be independent, self-disciplined and to take responsibility for their learning. This is coupled with a sense of fun as children explore and discover on a daily basis.Although the focus becomes more academic as pupils progress through the school, we aim to provide a well-balanced curriculum with lots of opportunities inside and outside the classroom.Richard Cairns, Headmaster at Brighton College commented recently that Dorset House pupils, `arrive willing to learn and inspired to think outside the box’.
PERFORMING & CREATIVE ARTS
Children are encouraged in the Creative Arts from Reception to Year 8 and they are always happy to talk to visitors about what they have been doing in Art, Design Technology, Music or Drama.
SPORTS
Children are taught by specialist Sport and PE teachers from Reception to Year 8. PE and Games are taught and competitive matches against other schools played by all children from Year 3 to Year 8. There are House competitions in all the major sports.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR
Life outside the classroom is such an important part of children’s lives at Dorset House and their experience in these areas helps them greatly as they progress through the school and on to senior school and beyond. With increasing numbers of young people achieving high grades in their academic studies, it can often be what they have to offer, and what they have experienced in addition to their examination results, which can impress university admissions teams and indeed employers.
Selection Criteria: Selective
They aim to make the admissions process as friendly and straightforward as possible and this will often start with a conversation with the Registrar, Sarah O’Brien who can be contacted on 01798 831456 or via email ([email protected]) She can speak to you about the next steps and arrange for you to meet the Headmaster.
