Downsend School is Independent Secondary school in Not applicable for kids aged 6 to 16 (Gender - 6 to 16 )
The motto translates to ‘nothing is denied to valour’ and this is a legacy we embrace at Downsend every day. Never has that been more true than now, as 2020 has not turned out to be how any of us imagined. But, in true Downsend style, we embrace everything the future has to offer by preparing our young people to be global citizens, by encouraging bravery, celebrating innovation, and creating opportunity every day.We aim to inspire young minds to engage in the world around them and think for themselves. Our pupils work hard and learn by getting actively involved in everything they do. It’s not out of the ordinary to see the Battle of Hastings being re-enacted on the cricket pitch. A class investigating air resistance outdoors tied to parachutes. Or our Little Downsend children acquiring numeracy skills in Forest School.Children are excited to come to school, parents tell us. Here, English, Science, Maths, Languages, Humanities, Art and Technology are being lifted off the pages of textbooks and worksheets with such creativity, thanks to our highly skilled teachers.

Enrichment at Downsend
They pride ourselves on the breadth of opportunity we provide for our young people to gain new skills. The extensive Enrichment Programme, led by our Leaders of Enrichment includes STRETCH, a wide variety of clubs, trips, sport, and the creative arts. The aim is to inspire every pupil, encouraging them to pursue and develop their individual interests and abilities, providing them with valuable learning experiences alongside their studies to become independent, mature individuals. The Club programme specifically aims for breadth, whilst always ensuring that pupils are challenged to improve the skills they will need in the future.
Sport
From supporting budding athletes through an elite pathway to providing all pupils with the opportunity to represent their school through competition, the aim is the same. To promote positive wellbeing and develop character and resilience that comes through participation in sport. We offer Football, Rugby (in specific age groups), Cricket, Hockey, and Swimming alongside Athletics, Gymnastics, Badminton, Basketball, Cross-Country, Biathlon, and Tennis. Depending on your child’s age, we’ll focus on the development of different skills – from gross motor skills and coordination at Little Downsend and the Junior School, to agility, cardiovascular endurance, and power in the Senior years. We focus on a holistic approach to sport, teaching the importance of movement alongside the fundamentals of nutrition and an understanding of the human body. All pupils have at least 3 hours of PE/Games a week as part of the curriculum, with opportunities for extra-curricular clubs and matches.
Creative Arts
The Creative Arts are a fundamental part of what Downsend has to offer, as they firmly believe that integrating the arts into traditional academia brings significant benefits to a child’s cognitive growth, to their enjoyment of learning and ultimately to their educational outcomes.
