They believe that each word in our school name is hugely important and is linked directly to our ethos and values, and what we seek to do on a daily basis. They are proud to serve the people of County Durham and our students are drawn from a wide geographical area. We take our name from James Finley Weir Johnston, a successful scientist who bequeathed money so that both boys and girls from Durham could access a high-quality education. We have been providing a rich and varied academic curriculum since 1901 and are proud to have a long and distinguished history. Subject specific knowledge and an awareness of Britain and the wider world are hugely important as students develop and learn. The quality of education that we offer is comprehensive in terms of both breadth and scope.

Academic Curriculm
They want all students to make progress, regardless of their background or ability. We think that it is important to know things and to develop excellent subject knowledge during the time they are with us. We want students to work well with others, to try new things without fear of making mistakes and to value and enjoy learning.

Sixth Form
This is a major step and one which deserves time and attention. The general advice is to choose subjects which you find interesting – when you go from ten subjects to three, four (or exceptionally five) and spend five lessons and four to five hours homework each week on a course it really helps to want to do it. Secondly play to your strengths, universities will offer places on the basis of grades so look at how you have done so far, use teachers’ advice and look at what the courses involve. Thirdly be aware of any requirements of the courses or careers you may be interested in.
