Based in the iconic and historical City of Durham, Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation delivers independent, co-educational day and boarding experiences for pupils aged 3 to 18.

Facilities

  • Sporting facilities consist of: an Astroturf sports field, two sports halls, a cardiovascular suite, gym facilities, our own pool, and access to the Durham University Sports Centre. 
  • The Foundation has one of the largest cathedral choirs in the country, providing pupils with the experience of performing regularly in the historic and iconic Durham Cathedral.Other excellent resources include a music technology room, large rehearsal spaces, nine teaching/practice rooms, a three manual Harrison & Harrison organ in the school chapel and a harpsichord.

Things to note

  • During the Games sessions, pupils take part in traditional sports: rugby, rowing, cricket, hockey and netball. Alongside these, pupils can take part in a wide range of sports including athletics, badminton, basketball, cross country, pentathlon, rounders, swimming, and tennis.
  • At Durham Cathedral Schools Foundation, they pride ourselves on offering pupils a first-class musical education.
  • Pupils have the opportunity to participate in a variety of trips and excursions at home and abroad.
  • Once the pupils are in Year 9 at Durham School, they will have the opportunity to join Combined Cadet Force (CCF).
  • At Durham School, pupils participate in a range of drama events, including House Drama competitions, drama clubs and school productions. 
  • Weekly activity programme at Durham School provides all students with the opportunity to cultivate new or existing interests, making new friends and developing a broad range of practical and personal skills.

Admission Details

Early Years Entry: FS1 Children can join Bow in the term following their third birthday. Starting dates are at the beginning of a new term: September, January and April. FS2 Children start school in the academic year that they are four, turning five years old (rising fives). If currently attending a Nursery setting, they will ask the Nursery to provide a reference based on development against the Early Years Assessment Framework. Families are also asked to complete a Parental Self-Assessment Form which helps to give us an indication of your child’s developmental stages. Prior to starting in Early Years, a Nursery or Home visit may be helpful and can assist transition. They also offer Taster sessions in school to help with starting school.

Years 1-6 Entry: Visiting Chorister School is the first step in Admissions process, this gives you the opportunity to learn more about school and meet staff. Following your visit, they can answer any further questions that you may have and start the application process. They will require an academic report from your child’s current school. A taster session is also suggested so that you and your child develop ‘a good feel’ for school. If you are unable to visit school, they will work with you to communicate and receive the necessary information by email and/or Skype meeting.

Year 7 Entry: Children joining the senior school at Year 7 will sit 11+ entrance examinations in English, Mathematics, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.

Year 9 Entry: Children joining in Year 9 sit entrance examinations in English and Mathematics.

Sixth Form: Pupils wishing to join in Year 12 must satisfy minimum entrance criteria of 5 GCSEs at grade 6 (or equivalent) and English Language and Mathematics at grade 4. Pupils who join in other years or part way through the year will normally be required to sit an entrance test appropriate to their age. Scholarships

Headmaster’s Scholarship: Each year they award a Headmaster’s Scholarship, worth 100% of school fees, to one outstanding boy or girl on entry at 11+. The award is based on talent across a number of areas, including academic ability, and is a recognition of the importance the school places on an all-round contribution. The award is assessed in the same way as a King's Scholarship, plus an interview with the Headmaster.

King's Scholarships: These academic awards are available for candidates at 11+ and 13+ entering Year 7 and 9. At 11+ scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance in the entrance assessments plus an interview with the Headmaster. At 13+ there is a separate scholarship examination in English and Mathematics, followed by an interview. This is offered to candidates who perform well in the 13+ entrance assessments. These scholarships are available for the entirety of a pupil’s education and are worth £1,000 per annum. Applicants can apply for up to 40% additional discount from the day fee, subject to appropriate means testing.

Burkitt Scholarships: A number of Burkitt Scholarships are awarded to candidates at 16+ entering Year 12. Candidates must sit tests in English, mathematics and critical thinking and attend an interview. Burkitt awards are not a fixed amount but are funded by the Burkitt Trust and can range from £1,000 up to 100% of fees subject to means testing. Burkitt scholars are also eligible for support worth up to £1,000 per annum if successful in gaining entry to either Oxford or Cambridge Universities.

Peter Lee Scholarships: This scholarship, funded by a bequest from Peter Lee OD, are ONLY available for academically and musically elite pupils of Chinese ancestry. Up to 100% funding is available for the top performing candidate. Bursary awards, up to the value of 30% reduction in fees, may also be offered to top performing candidates achieving outstanding results in the examination. A GCSE tariff of 6 A* and A grades is set as a condition of the award. Candidates NOT following this curriculum must be able to offer an equivalent qualification(s). Elite musical talent must be demonstrated with a minimum of Grade 7 on their principal instrument with preferably a Merit or Distinction level. Ability on a second instrument is desirable but not essential.

Other Scholarships & Awards: In addition to Academic Scholarships they also offer a limited number of awards at 11+, 13+ and 16+ in a range of other disciplines:
