11-18 Years

Description

Guiseley School is a State Secondary school for kids aged 11 to 18 (Gender - Mixed)

As a School community they aspire to provide a world class education for the young people of the local community. Over the last four years we have made great strides towards this aim. The new buildings are now complete and the final demolition and landscaping phase of the project has begun. The school returned to an OFSTED rating of ‘Good’ in all areas in the inspection of September 2019 and was recognised for both the high standards of behaviour and quality of the curriculum.  Guiseley School is a fully comprehensive school that is committed to ensuring all students can reach their potential and they will continue to strive to ensure this is the case. It is the responsibility to provide an education that equips young people not only to succeed academically but also gives them the confidence, skills and social awareness to go on to be involved and active 21st century citizens in their local community. They do this by creating enjoyment of learning and excellent opportunities to get involved in a wide and varied curriculum. They are delighted to be classified as an ‘Artsmark Platinum’ school that provides excellent opportunities in Drama, Art, and Music. They also ensure opportunities are varied in sports teams, academic societies and the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

KEY STAGE 3 CURRICULUM (YEARS 7 TO 9)
In order to implement our curriculum vision, the curriculum teams have carefully mapped the knowledge and skills students are required to master. It is, however, important to them that the Year 7 to 9 curriculum is more than preparation for Key Stage 4. We give more curriculum time to Humanities and Modern Foreign Languages than many schools as they wish to encourage a high proportion of pupils to pursue the English Baccalaureate pathway beyond Year 9.   Students in Year 7 and 8 study either German or Spanish. Students in Year 9 have been studying two languages and will continue to do so until the end of Year 9 when they will choose which language to continue.

KEY STAGE 4 CURRICULUM (YEARS 10 AND 11)
The Key Stage 4 Curriculum is designed so that students can experience a range of opportunities across the curriculum and is taken over two years although Year 9 acts as a bridging year across a number of subjects. All students have access to the EBacc suite but take a mix of GCSE and other Level 2 qualifications so as to experience a mix of learning and assessment styles.  In Key Stage 4, pupils have enhanced time for the core subjects of English, Science and Mathematics as the building blocks for their progression routes.  Core curriculum time is given for PE, recognising the importance of health and fitness in the lives.  All pupils study Science, and a large proportion of our students choose to a foreign language.

KEY STAGE 5 CURRICULUM (SIXTH FORM)
The Key Stage 3 and 4 principles continue into the Sixth Form enabling high aspiration and clear lines of progression. The curriculum is built around facilitating subjects as the majority of Sixth Form students apply to University courses (students can study three, with some scope for four A levels). This offer sits alongside curriculum enhancement opportunities such as Extended Project Qualifications, Sports Leadership or Arts Mark Gold. They aim to give students a sense of control over their Sixth Form programme enabling a broad education offering a wide choice and essential skills for a rapidly-changing world. During the student’s time in the Sixth Form, they will gain employability skills which are taught through form time sessions as well as a wide range of volunteering opportunities and a work experience programme.
