Heathfield School is a leading independent weekly, full boarding and day school for girls aged 11 – 18.

Things to note

  • As well as running teams and clubs in all major sports, the department offers girls the opportunity to join a variety of clubs such as Badminton, Fitness, Football, Polo and Riding. These are open to all ages and abilities and are an excellent opportunity for older girls to coach and mix with the younger years.
  • Heathfield runs a full Dance programme. Students take classes in a newly refurbished Dance Studio fitted with ballet barres, mirrors and harlequin dance flooring.
  • The study of Drama and Theatre Studies plays a significant role in the creative academic and pastoral aspects of student’s development at Heathfield. Based in St Mary’s Theatre, Drama lessons for all year groups take place in the auditorium, with smaller classes and LAMDA lessons making use of a smaller, more intimate studio space. 
  • Heathfield has a growing reputation for equestrian disciplines and runs a full equestrian programme including show jumping, polo, dressage, hacking and military riding for beginners through to advanced riders. 
  • Music is a particular strength at Heathfield and the opportunities for experienced and novice musicians and singers are extensive.

Admission Details

Joining Heathfield at 11+: Candidates will be assessed in numeracy, literacy and non-verbal ability via the online CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) test. The assessment is designed to evaluate potential rather than knowledge, so tutoring and preparation are not required. They will also attend an interview with the Headmistress. 

Joining Heathfield at 13+: Candidates will be assessed in numeracy, literacy and non-verbal ability via the online CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring) test. The assessment is designed to evaluate potential rather than knowledge, so tutoring and preparation are not required. They will also attend an interview with the Headmistress. 

Joining Heathfield at 16+: Heathfield welcomes applications from candidates wishing to join the school for A Level study. Registered Sixth Form candidates will be invited to visit the School for an interview with the Head of Sixth Form. Offers are made conditional on iGCSE/GCSE results, performance at interview and a reference from the current school. Candidates should achieve a minimum of six grades 9-4 (A* – C) with a minimum grade 6 (B) in any subject taken at GCSE that is to be pursued at A Level.

Joining as an International Student: Overseas students are welcomed at Heathfield.  Applicants should register with the School and will be invited to the relevant assessment for their year of entry. Where it is not possible for candidates to attend for assessment, they should submit a UKiset profile (see www.ukiset.com for details).  An interview with the Headmistress will be conducted via Zoom and assessments for international students also include language testing.

Scholarships

Academic Scholarship

  • Forms I and III: An academic scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who performs highly in all aspects of the assessment and interview. There is no separate academic scholarship examination or interview.
  • Sixth Form: Candidates, who are expected to have A and A* predictions at GCSE, submit a letter of application and are required to sit a scholarship paper. This paper contains evaluation, logic and reasoning questions. There is also an interview with the Deputy Head (Academic) or Assistant Head (Sixth Form).

Art Scholarship

11+ (Forms I), 13+ (Form III) and Sixth Form: Art Scholarships are awarded to outstanding pupils who demonstrate a highly refined skill level and genuine commitment to furthering their abilities and experiences in any area of Art and Design. Candidates are required to present a portfolio which showcases examples of their best work. 

Drama Scholarship

  • 11+ (Form I) and 13+ (Form III): Candidates are required to prepare and perform a monologue of their own choosing of 2 minutes maximum. A review of no more than 500 words about a play or performance they have seen in the last year should also be submitted.There will also be an interview with the Director of Drama.
  • Sixth Form: Candidates are required to prepare a monologue (no more than 2 minutes) to be performed at interview and write a review about a play or performance they have seen in the last year. There will also be an interview with the Director of Drama. 11+ and 13+ applicants are expected to study GCSE Drama and Sixth Form applicants should be taking Drama and Theatre A Level.

Music Scholarship

  • 11+ (Form I): Candidates are required to perform a sight-reading test and play either two instruments (at least one to be at Grade I) or sing and play one instrument (at Grade I). There will also be an interview with the Director of Music.
  • 13+ (Form III): Candidates are required to perform a sight-reading test and play either two instruments (at least one to be at Grade III) or sing and play one instrument (at Grade III). There will also be an interview with the Director of Music.
  • Sixth Form: Music/choral scholarships are awarded to outstanding musicians who play an instrument or sing with exceptional ability (at Grade V). There will also be an interview with the Director of Music.11+ and 13+ applicants are expected to study GCSE Music and Sixth Form applicants should be taking Music A Level.

Sports Scholarship

  • 11+ (Form I): Candidates will be assessed through a variety of fitness and skill related tests alongside more sport specific core skills. Although candidates must play an integral part of their School’s sporting programme and represent the School in two or more sports, this scholarship is also looking at the potential demonstrated by the candidate and takes into account their various sporting backgrounds.There will also be an interview with the Director of Sport.
  • 13+ (Form III): Candidates must demonstrate a high level of competence in two or more sports: this will usually mean representing their School A team in both sports (as a minimum) as well as being an integral part of their School’s sporting programme. They will be assessed through a variety of fitness and skill related tests alongside more sport specific core skills. Applicants should be taking GCSE PE.
  • Sixth Form: Sixth Form Candidates are expected to represent their School 1st team as a minimum requirement in at least one sport. It is naturally assumed that the higher the level of representation, that this may be the only sport being offered due to the commitment and training required to maintain this standard.There will also be an interview with the Director of Sport. Applicants should be taking A Level Physical Education.

Equestrian Scholarship

11+ (Form I), 13+ (Form III) and Sixth Form: Candidates must demonstrate a high degree of horsemanship and/or horsemanship potential. Equestrian scholars will be expected to make a significant contribution to the equestrian life of the school and to represent the school in competitions. They will be asked to present a short display and will also take part in an interview with the Equestrian Coordinator.

Photography Scholarship

Sixth Form: Candidates are required to submit a small portfolio of 4-6 photographs they have taken themselves and 1-2 photographs that they like by other photographers. Candidates will be required to provide analytical comment on these images in an interview with the Head of Photography. Applicants should be taking Photography A Level.
