Academic
Years 2-4 are primarily under the care of form mistresses and there is a strong emphasis on reading, writing and basic numeracy. However, their curriculum also includes Science, French, Drama, Religious Studies, Music, ICT, Art and DT which are taught by specialists. In Year 5, Latin is started and boys remain under the guidance of a form teacher but the majority of teaching is delivered by subject specialists. In Year 2, there is one class, and years 3-5, there are two classes.In years 6-8, two classes become three, and a formal scholarship set is created to whom Greek is also taught. French is 'set' in Year 7 with all subjects 'set' in Year 8. Schemes of work are designed with close reference to the National Curriculum, Common Entrance and Public School scholarship syllabuses. It is very much the belief that teachers should be there to inspire the boys and not just to be 'curriculum deliverers'.
Sport
Papplewick offers a remarkably wide range of sports. They play Football for the first ten weeks of the Michaelmas term before switching to Rugby for the last three weeks in preparation for the Lent term. The main sport of the term in the summer is Cricket.Beyond the main team sport of the term, during the winter terms, the boys also have the chance to represent the school in squash, swimming, cross-country, hockey, polo, shooting, table tennis, and chess. In the summer, the calendar is packed with other fixtures including tennis, swimming, athletics, golf, polo and croquet.
Activities
The outstanding range of activities on offer at Papplewick is a feature of the school that the boys value enormously. In short, they can never get bored!On Thursdays, instead of lessons and games, the boys at Papplewick take part in an afternoon of activities. These activities range from sporting to the dramatic and as many different types of activities as possible are offered. A selection of the activities on offer are: Karate, Squash, Photography, Scuba Diving, Polo, Riding, Pioneers (Papplewick’s answer to the scouts), Real Tennis, Clay Pigeon Shooting, Golf, Chess, Drama, Cookery, Bibliomanics, Airfix club, Lego and craft activities, Junior Jigsaws, board games, Harry Potter Club and Martial Arts
Music
The Music Department aims to develop and nurture the musical talents of all our boys and foster a love and enjoyment for music-making of all styles and genres. There are a variety of performance opportunities throughout the year, and all boys are encouraged to be involved. There is a strong tradition of vocal music, with our four part Chapel Choir performing at weekly Chapel services, a secular Second Choir, a Junior Choir, and the performance of various musicals. Three quarters of the boys learn a musical instrument and there is a junior brass ensemble, string ensemble, wind band, jazz collective, scholars' ensemble and chamber orchestra.
Art
At Papplewick, education in art is seen as a time in the week when pupils are encouraged to extend not only their powers of creativity, imagination and awareness of the visual world, but also as an opportunity to develop their mental powers. They follow a structured teaching programme which builds upon their skills as they progress through the school. They encourage an appreciation of different cultures and artists throughout history. Papplewick has a well equipped art room with additional facilities for both ceramics and printmaking.
Drama
Drama begins in the Lower school where boys are encouraged to listen to each other and work together to a common goal. They take part in poetry reciting and class plays as well as variety shows which blend public speaking, music and group work.Throughout the school, each year every year group takes part in a stage play as well as having weekly drama lessons in the Michaelmas and Lent terms to foster the work begun in the Lower school. All take part in a Spring Arts Festival at Easter. The senior boys often do plays in chapel as well as put on full musicals each Christmas. This has become the greatest team sport as most productions have large casts.
