Reception
The curriculum for the Reception class (Navigators) is carefully planned and layered to meet the bespoke needs of every child in the setting. They use key experiences which inspire and engage our youngest children to learn and support them in achieving the key skills and Early Learning goals within the Early Years Foundation Stage. The specifically designed curriculum underpins all future learning and prepares children for more formal schooling by supporting, fostering, promoting and developing learning behaviours, inquiry skills and a thirst for learning and discovery.Over the course of the year, learning and expectations are layered to ensure the children are fully prepared for life in our Pre Prep, both academically and personally ready for a slightly more formal educational experience.
Pre-Prep (Forms 1-2) Key Stage 1
Based on solid foundations introduced in Reception (Navigators), in Pre-Prep throughout Forms 1 and 2 children continue to grow in confidence and independence. Small classes enable our teaching team, with the assistance of experienced Teaching Assistants, to provide all children with the levels of support, challenges and attention they deserve.Pupils are happy and consequently make excellent progress in all curriculum areas. They hear all children read either individually or in a very small group on a daily basis, resulting in them rapidly becoming fluent and confident early readers. The teaching team also joins the children in the dining room at lunchtime and supervises both morning and afternoon playtimes.
Prep (Forms 3-6) Key Stage 2
By the time your child reaches Prep (Key Stage 2) they will be gaining in confidence and ready for new challenges. They will be fully familiar with the Prep staff which makes the transition between Pre-Prep and Prep seamless.Events such as ‘Moving up Mornings’, House Assemblies and Theme Days ensure that the children are able to take change in their stride. They happily interact, support and care for one another. At Highfields they pride ourselves on high expectations of the children and they have an evolving curriculum that allows the children to make decisions, follow their interests and achieve success. As a supportive teaching team they frequently meet to discuss and monitor each child’s progress thus ensuring that any areas of difficulty are identified and they are catering for all learning styles.
Speech and Drama at Highfields School
Speech and Drama forms an important part of the curriculum at Highfields School. The pupils are confident in expressing their thoughts and ideas and develop confidence in addressing an audience through class and whole school opportunities to develop the use of language and communication skills. They focus as a whole school school on widening vocabulary and developing pupils’ presentation skills. The pupils enjoy speaking in public and they provide a variety of opportunities for them to practise these skills in a safe environment for example assemblies, church services, sporting events and our annual talent show ‘Highfields Got Talent’.
Remote Learning
They are extremely proud of the Remote Learning at Highfields. They have a virtual school called ‘Highfields Online’ on Google Classroom with a plethora of different classrooms bursting with learning and inspiring our learners to explore a variety of subject areas and topics. The rooms include virtual form rooms for every year group where teachers set learning tasks and pupils can meet in a safe place to talk about their learning or just generally chat.
Highfields Music Department
