Things to note

  • Outdoor sports, which include, football, rugby, netball, tennis, cricket, cross-country, softball and rounders take place in neighbouring Regent’s Park ­ just a ten minute walk from the school.
  • Portland Place School hosts a range of local and overnight trips including those within the UK and abroad.
  • ISA Shakespeare Festival has been a great success over the past three years. This year’s entry of Hamlet was performed as part of the One Night of Shakespeare, with the cast of 14 students across Year 9 and 10, this was performed and recorded in our drama studio with appropriate lights, costumes, and sound, to bring to life this modern adaption of this Shakespeare classic. 
  • The Autumn term includes a Christmas concert at RADA studios, to fully showcase the musical ability of the students, with items from the school choirs, including the Chamber Choir, as well as student’s performing solos and duets that they had put together, with the support of staff. They also host carols in All Souls Church Langham and a separate senior chamber concert in the school hall.
  • Creative arts lessons include elements such as set design, music technology using software such as Garageband, silent movie scheme (where students learnt the origins of this art form and then had the chance to film their own movie).
  • They offer Year 7 the Symphonfree Scheme, which gives free music tuition and the loan of an instrument for the whole of Year 7, and participation in the Year 7 Orchestra. They also host external projects such as workshops from the Berkeley Ensemble, which explored chamber music, the professional musicians in the ensemble, and the instruments that they played. 
  • They offer a wide range of clubs and activities which take place in all three of our buildings, these activities run throughout the course of the day; before school, during lunch and after school.

Admission Details

Prior to applying please come and visit school to meet the headmaster and learn more about the ethos of Portland Place School. This can be done on a formal tour or with a private tour. Details of these can be found on open events page.

  • The admissions process starts with submitting an application on online portal.
  • Your child will then be invited to attend a 20 minute interview with the headmaster.
  • They ask that all applicants take a baseline assessment test to understand their current level and they will contact their existing school for a reference.
  • A decision on the application will then be made and parents notified.
  • Acceptance documentation and a deposit will be required to secure your child’s place. Your child will be invited to the school or for an induction day prior to starting.

Year 6 entrants will be offered a taster day in the spring term during which they will complete an assessment in Mathematics and English.
Year 7 entrants to sit assessments in Mathematics and English.
Years 8 to 10 entrants to sit assessments in Mathematics, English and Science.

Fees

Tuition Fees:

  • Day School tuition fees are charged equally over three termly instalments of £7,845 each.
  • Hybrid School tuition fees are charged equally over three termly instalments of £4,000 each.

Scholarships

Creative Arts and Sports Scholarships 2023/24 Entry: A limited number of scholarships will be available to Year 7 and Year 9 applicants to Portland Place School in September 2023. Scholarships will be worth up to 10% of school fees. All scholarships are reviewed annually and their continuance is dependent upon satisfactory conduct, attitude, participation and progress. The dates for assessment are detailed in the information for each scholarship. The notification of outcome of the application will be sent with offer letters in February 2023.

Art Scholarships: Art scholarships are open to students from any school applying for Year 7 or Year 9 entry. They are looking for students who meet the normal academic requirements of the school but who also demonstrate outstanding ability in Art, particularly through creativity, imagination, manipulative
skills, strong powers of observation and evidence of some specialist language and concepts appropriate to the appreciation of art. They expect holders of Art scholarships to make a significant extra-curricular commitment to their art work. Applicants will be asked to submit a portfolio of their work for assessment. The portfolio should demonstrate a high level of personal achievement and commitment to art and design.

Drama Scholarships: Drama scholarships are open to students from any school applying for Year 7 or Year 9 entry. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate considerable natural ability and have performance skills that will act as an excellent role model to others. The school is looking for individuals who display both talent and the attributes valued in the theatre: reliability, flexibility, dedication and team working skills. Successful candidates will be expected to make a full contribution to the Creative Arts life of the school, participating regularly in theatrical productions. Holders of the scholarship must be an excellent ambassador for the Drama department. Applicants will be asked to take part in collaborative learning with our current students during their timetabled lessons and an audition. Audition pieces can be the applicant’s choice, either a Shakespearean or contemporary text will be accepted. Audition speeches should be around 2 minutes long.

Music Scholarships: Music scholarships are open to students from any school applying for Year 7 or Year 9 entry. Music Scholarships are awarded strictly on ability and potential as tested at audition by the Director of Music. The Music curriculum is diverse and wide ranging using the many resources available. They have a broad range of facilities including the most up-to-date, industry-standard technology for all students to develop sequencing and score-writing skills, as well as a range of practical resources including a Samba drum set and a set of djembe drums. The Symphonfree Scheme provides all Year 7 students with free beginner instrumental tuition and free instrumental loan leading to the development of ensemble skills which is incorporated into the Music curriculum. 

Sports Scholarships: Sports scholarships are open to students from any school applying for Year 7 or Year 9 entry. Sports scholarships are available to talented athletes to support their development both academically and on the field of play. Experience playing one of our major sports (netball, rugby, football, cricket or athletics) is essential. Applicants will be invited in to participate in Sports/Games with the appropriate year group to measure performance against peers. Evidence of participation at club (or higher) level outside school will also be taken into account.
