Queen Elizabeth Grammar Junior School is Independent Primary school in Wakefield for kids aged 4 to 11 (Gender - Boys )
QEGS is one of the top independent boys’ schools in the country and has been educating boys for over 400 years. Now, they aim to combine the best of a traditional approach with an openness to innovation to be a down-to-earth school which prepares boys to take their place in the modern world.Woven into QEGS’ unique DNA are the twin strands of academic excellence and extra-curricular opportunity. The school offers a boy-friendly environment where every day is an adventure
Learning
They know that boys respond best to teaching styles which fit their needs; active, well-paced practical learning with frequent brain breaks and opportunities for movement. So our Junior Section offers a learning environment tailored to meet their specific learning requirements. The broad-based curriculum from 7-11 years includes a range of teaching and learning styles which provide stimulation and strong foundations for the future, and more importantly, give boys the confidence to learn and grow at their own pace.Since QEGS was founded, every year of the existence has been focused on enhancing the joy of learning. It’s a joy that has continued unabated across the centuries, resonating along every corridor and in every teaching space. They create a vibrant climate for learning, celebrating discovery, championing success and ensuring that every lesson in and out of the classroom is buzzing with curiosity and enthusiasm.
Sixth Form
The Sixth Form experience provides students with personalised care and attention – helping boys to manage their studies, make informed choices, and ensure these two crucial years are happy and enjoyable. The 26 subjects on offer create both breadth and flexibility for students, with some subjects taught jointly with Wakefield Girls’ High School. Students usually study three A levels, in a relaxed classroom environment facilitated by the small class sizes (typically 8—12), led by staff who are experts in their field.
Music
Making music is an integral part of daily life at the school, with an abundance of opportunities for all ages and abilities. The growth of musical talent is organic and eclectic, with jazz, rock, funk, blues and classical ensembles evolving without fanfare but with great success throughout the year. We give boys every opportunity to showcase their abilities, from formal performances and composers’ concerts, to lunchtime recitals and school assemblies.
Sport
At QEGS, ‘sport for all’ is a principle we live and breathe every day. At every level of sport at QEGS, boys are encouraged to wear the crest and live the values and this philosophy has helped the school to develop an enviable reputation for sporting excellence, with individual and team successes ranging from county to national honours.
Extra Curricular
It’s the rich array of experiences, activities and societies that makes QEGS such a bustling, dynamic and exciting place to be. Over 50 clubs and societies are held during the school week, encouraging involvement, firing passions and igniting new interests. Alongside QED, the many dedicated lunchtime clubs, societies and musical collaborations add breadth and diversity to the #MadeInQEGS experience. Our Junior Section enjoys a wonderfully wide-ranging programme of extracurricular activities at lunchtime and after school, from drama and science to gardening and fencing.

Academic Scholarships
Every year, the school awards a number of academic scholarships to the brightest boys entering the Senior Section and Sixth Form. These are designed to recognise and celebrate individual achievement. Perhaps more importantly, they are designed to broaden horizons and encourage students to go “beyond the syllabus”. Award holders will be encouraged to go that extra mile intellectually via a number of avenues, ranging from extra reading and subject masterclasses to debating groups and Olympiads.
Radcliffe Scholars
John Radcliffe attended QEGS in the 1660s and went on to be a pre-eminent man of medicine in Restoration England (hence the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford.) These scholarships, named in his honour, are awarded to boys who perform particularly strongly in the (11-plus) Entrance Examination and subsequent interview with the Headmaster. Boys enjoy access to a range of enrichment opportunities designed to stretch them academically as they move through to their GCSEs.
Savile Scholars
These scholarships, named after Sir Henry Savile and his family who played such a prominent role in founding the school in 1591, can be awarded at two stages and recognise exceptional achievement in public examinations. Firstly, those achieving a high number of top grades at GCSE become Savile Scholars throughout their Sixth Form studies. This recognition acts as a springboard to high attainment at A level and thence to top universities.
