Features

Things to note

  • Music is a vibrant part of the school, with numerous opportunities for children to get involved both on a regular basis and for specific events or productions. In the Senior School, we aim to develop pupils into confident musicians through performing in one of the many groups on offer, including Choir, String group, Brass group, Wind Band, Ukulele club and Rock Bands.
  • The Senior Choir plays an important role in Chapel, singing on occasions such as Remembrance, Christmas, Easter and the final Valedictory Service at the end of the school year. Junior and Senior Concerts are held regularly and annual Senior House Music Competition not only showcases individual talent but also allows all students to perform in their House Choir – led by Sixth Form students and extremely competitive!
  • In Drama, the School puts on a fully-staged musical every two years. In 2017, production of ‘Oliver’ featured children from Years 3 to 13 and, in Spring Term 2019, they will be staging ‘Grease’. Productions for other parts of the School are also staged, the most recent being ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’, which involved pupils from Years 7 to 9.
  • Pupils are also taken to concert and theatre trips in order to experience live music and drama. Recent highlights including Nicola Benedetti at Leeds Town Hall, ‘The Lion King’ in Manchester, ‘Billy Elliot’ in Bradford, ‘Stomp’ in Sheffield and ‘Wicked’ in London.
  • For some, they enjoy being involved because they are fun and they enjoy the variety this gives them away from their academic studies; for others, it enables them to participate at the highest possible level, such as through playing in the top rugby and hockey teams or performing in a string quartet or speaking in a debating competition.

Admission Details

During the admissions process they take time to get to know your child including their likes, interests and hobbies. The pupils are encouraged to believe in their talents and strive to achieve the best academic results they can, but most importantly they are well-rounded, kind, happy and supportive individuals who are able to grab all that life has to offer once they leave Silcoates.Success in life is not all about gaining a straight set of A* grades it’s about being adaptable, creative and having a whole load of self-belief and resilience. The breadth of expertise within our teaching staff and the co-curricular opportunities available push and develop pupils to try things they never thought they could achieve. Happy, self-confident children thrive, it’s as simple as that. They have Open Mornings in October and March however, the best time to see the school is during a “typical” school day. Come along and see the lessons in action, watch the interaction of pupils on campus and visit the breadth of facilities on offer. Meet the Headmaster and Senior team, and take time with the friendly admissions team who are there to ensure you gain all the information you need. Academic scholarships: Awarded to those entering the Senior School, whether from the Junior School or from elsewhere, who have shown outstanding academic attainment, such as in the 11+ entrance tests, have a strong reference from their previous school (if applicable) and have demonstrated their ability and commitment in an interview with the Headmaster. In the Sixth Form, a scholarship will only be considered if a pupil has achieved at least five 8 or 9 grades at GCSE (or A* where applicable). Only in exceptional circumstances will an academic scholarship be offered to a pupil in the Junior School or Pre-School. The value of the scholarship awarded is as at the discretion of the Headmaster but the remission will be no more than 20% of the full fees.

Music scholarships: Music Scholarships at Silcoates may be awarded to candidates who demonstrate outstanding ability in Music for their age group. There is equally opportunity for both internal (Silcoates Junior School) and incoming external candidates to apply for and be awarded scholarships.

Art scholarships: Are assessed by the presentation of a portfolio and through practical assessments, as devised by the Head of Art. A remission of up to 10% of the full fee is awarded and this will be subject to conditions that will be stated in the offer letter. Scholars will be expected to take Art GCSE and, usually, A Level.
