Read School is a co-educational day and boarding school in North Yorkshire. They are academically non-selective and socially inclusive, offering a vibrant and supportive community in which to learn and grow.
The Read School exists to provide an all-round education for its pupils, combining independent tradition with the best of modern practice. Read School offers a wealth of opportunities, both academic and extra-curricular, and supports the development of the individual pupil, instilling confidence, enthusiasm and the aspiration to be the best they can be. More than that it is a happy place where pupils can learn in a supportive, friendly environment and where every pupil has the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the Read community. All pupils follow a broad-based curriculum during the first three years of the Senior School. There are two small form groups in each year group, who are taught together for most of their lessons. Each class is in the care of a Form Tutor, who is the first point of contact between the school and parents. About half of the pupils coming into Year 7 are new to the school and about half come from our Prep School.
Junior School
The Upper Junior School comprises the Key Stage 2 classes, Years 3 – 6, and is located in The Coggrave Building on the main school site. Coggrave is situated adjacent to the Senior School accommodation, enabling the school to retain its own identity, whilst allowing the children to share joint facilities with the Seniors, such as the Moloney Hall, the Sports Hall and playing fields, music facilities and the ICT suite. They foster a strong sense of family community where they nurture the individual child to fulfil their potential. Small learning groups help to promote self-esteem, creative expression and develop the enquiring mind.Individuals are encouraged to succeed, and they regularly share and celebrate these many achievements. They also encourage teamwork, which works wells with our small class sizes.
Senior School
Read School exists to provide an all-round education for its pupils, combining independent tradition with the best of modern practice. The guiding values at Read are those of fair-mindedness, hard work, enjoyment and treating others with respect and consideration. They also attach great importance to manners, good discipline, service to others and to caring for the School and external environment. They value both effort and achievement, and encourage every positive contribution that a pupil makes to the life of the Read School community. To succeed academically, as in all aspects of school life, pupils need to be recognised as individuals. They need to know that their very best is expected from them. The result is strong exam performance, but more importantly, a desire to learn.
Sixth Form
The Sixth Form is an important time for academic study, often as a preparation for and requirement of university entrance. Many boys and girls will have been at Read for some time prior to entering the Sixth Form. It is important that the Sixth Form is able to provide a different and altogether more adult experience, not just an extension of school. The York Sixth Form Centre is an airy, modern and open area for working and leisure during non-teaching time. Computer workstations, large worktables, access to careers and university information and a small area for relaxing and socialising are all included here, giving our most senior students the facilities they need and deserve. A small kitchen provides the facility to make hot drinks and prepare snacks.
Read School Sport
Sport is a crucial element of the educational experience we offer at Read. The variety, depth and quality of the provision are essential components in generating an atmosphere in which boys and girls can both develop and enjoy their sport, whilst also creating an awareness of the relationship between constructive exercise and a healthy lifestyle. Pupils of all abilities are encouraged to play meaningful and competitive sport, at House, School or representative level.
Drama
Drama at Read aims to develop pupils as both learners and individuals. The subject is not just for those who will become performers - of which there are many - but involves working as a team, exploring creativity, exercising the imagination and learning empathy. Pupils will learn how to plan and deliver their ideas, develop self-confidence and listen to the advice of others – all valuable life skills which will help them in whatever career path they choose.
Dance
The classes also promote health, wellbeing and positivity through the use of mindfulness, yoga and breathing techniques. Pupils also have the opportunity to create their own dances within a variety of themes to a range of music styles. Within the dance curriculum, pupils learn movements and dances from a number of dance styles and traditional/social dances from different times and cultures. The Junior School aims to achieve a strong cross-curricular link between subjects and dance offers many opportunities for this.
Music
Read School has a thriving music department where pupils of all ages engage with music lessons, both as part of the academic programme and as a valued extra-curricular activity.Music is taught in Junior and Senior School by specialist Music teachers. All pupils have one 55-minute class music lesson per week, rising to three in Years 10 and 11. The Moloney Trust Fund kindly donated a suite of Mac computers (with Sibelius and Logic) to the Music Department in 2019, and these programs are utilised in class music lessons.
