York Steiner School is Independent Secondary school in Non-selective for kids aged 3 to 14 (Gender - 3 to 14 )
This is a place where children are celebrated and expert teachers and specialists deliver exciting, hands-on lessons in imaginative and inspiring ways. This is a place where children love to learn. They’re part of a family of 27 successful UK and Irish Steiner schools and 1,100 worldwide where, in many countries, Steiner schools are part of state-funded education and considered mainstream. We are the fastest growing educational movement in the world and here in York we’re celebrating almost 40 years of providing exceptional education for thousands of children – both locally and those visiting from abroad. Classes are kept small for close attention from teachers and the school days are packed with academic lessons, practical work (our children are allowed to use tools and build things), music, art, sport and drama. Weather allowing, much of this will happen outdoors.
Early Years
At York Steiner School, we begin from the earliest age as we mean to go on – by treating each child with understanding and sympathy. We offer Gentle Beginnings groups specifically for parents with new babies and very young children, and Parent and Toddler groups for those with children under three years of age. These gentle mornings are a perfect introduction to ‘the Steiner way’ for both parent and child alike.
Kindergarten
Early childhood is a precious time, full of joy and wonder. It is a time of discovery and sensory experiences, never to be forgotten – or repeated. The beautiful kindergartens provide a warm, nurturing environment where children grow and learn at their own pace while developing as individuals.Children join us any time from the age of 3 and many will already have experienced our Gentle Beginnings and Parent and Child groups, also held here in school. In Kindergarten we hold the unique child at the heart of everything we do and the children experience a gentle daily rhythm with a balance of self-initiated play and adult-led activities across the 7 areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Main School
By the age of 6 our children are ready for the excitement of moving into our Main School – where they will stay until they are 14. The relationship with their Class Teacher is very special. This is someone who is always there to greet them each morning, who listens to their opinions and has the time to nurture each child’s particular talents and needs as an individual. The school day starts with a morning ‘main’ lesson focusing on the core subjects of the curriculum in block periods of three to four weeks. It embeds these subjects in a range of physical, artistic and mental activities that stimulate and engage the children while the rest of the day is given to languages and practical activities such as crafts, eurythmy, gym and woodwork.
Parent and Child Groups
Welcome to all parents – and grandparents – at the magical Parent and Child groups where children up to 3½ years take part in joyful two-hour long sessions and make lots of new friends. After Free Play for the first hour, in the exciting room full of enriching play equipment and interesting places to explore, they then move on to a craft activity where you can take your child’s precious artwork home with you afterwards to enjoy. Finally, everyone sits down together for a home-made meal – where the children can join in with helping us to prepare the food and lay the table – ending with favourite songs and rhymes and sometimes a puppet play, before we say goodbye.
Anti-Racism Statement from SWSF
The Steiner Waldorf Schools Fellowship acknowledges the injustice and discrimination faced by people of colour in the UK and around the world over multiple generations. They recognise the immense damage this has done and the impact such discrimination continues to have on the members of those communities as regards being treated equally and pursuing their hopes and dreams in life freely. It is fundamental to the ethos of Steiner Waldorf education that we be engaged in a continual process of enquiry, self-education and self-reflection both as individuals and as organisations. At SWSF we have been going through such a process in discussing issues of racism.
