Reflections Small School is Independent Primary school in West Sussex for kids aged 4 to 8 (Gender - Mixed )
They draw the inspiration from the pre-schools of Reggio Emilia in northern Italy. These schools are world famous for providing children with the very best in childcare and education. They also draw much inspiration from the forest nurseries of Denmark, world-renowned for their wonderful outdoor work with young children. They work too with the Early Years Foundation Stage – the national guidance for working with children from birth to five. So they give children the opportunity to develop across as many areas of learning as possible.
Nursery
At Reflections they are able to take children from 3 months old in our Baby Room; a large room with lots of natural light and a separate cosy Sleep Room, which is attended at all times. Children move on to the Toddler Section – a range of rooms where they can explore experiences including construction, imaginative play, and the exploration of materials. They are cared for by the educators with support from one of the four Atelieristas (in-house Artists) who will work with the children on their explorations of drawing, painting and working with clay, wire and other sculptural materials.
Forest School
They operate forest sessions for children aged 3+ years every morning from 9.30 am until 12.45 pm. Woodland sessions run from September to July and we take children by minibus into the own woodland area, 15 minutes from the nursery. The children use their imaginations and build dens and traps and often tell elaborate stories as part of their experiences. They explore the woodland together and they grow in confidence and self-esteem.
Beach School
For children over 3 years old we offer Beach School experiences for a small group every day. On a Beach School day, children have the opportunity to tend to the edible garden, feed the chickens, and cook in our pizza oven or on the open fire. In the afternoon the group go to the local beach by minibus for exploration and discovery. The beach raises interesting questions that the children will often discuss together – they occasionally compile a diary after a session by the sea.
Edible Garden
In autumn 2010 the children did some planting in tubs, enabling the children to harvest potatoes in time for Christmas lunch. They planted fruit trees with the children in the front garden and they made clay ‘wishes’ to plant with each tree and buried them under the roots. In winter 2010 we acquired a large greenhouse, composting bins and raised beds and they planted espaliered fruits along the flint wall.Since then the children choose seeds with the two gardeners each season and then plant the seeds, prick them out and plant the seedlings in the raised beds.
