Sompting Abbotts Preparatory School is a West Sussex private school within easy reach of Worthing, Steyning and Brighton. Its 30 acres of grounds form part of the landscape of the South Downs National Park. It is a family-owned school. Founded in 1921, the school has been helping children meet their full potential for almost a century.The school sits in a sweeping expanse of woodland and chalk grassland. Nursery
Sompting Abbotts Nursery accepts children from the age of two years. Most parents use their Early Years Free Entitlement from West Sussex County Council. You're free to decide if you want your child to continue into the Reception Year at Sompting Abbotts Prep School or go to another school. They’re a small Early Years setting with maximum 18 children on any day so the nursery tends to suit children who prefer a supportive small-scale environment. They also put a big emphasis on child-centred exploration. All thr children get to spend lots of time outdoors, with at least one Forest-School style excursion to the woods each week.
Pre Prep
The Pre-Prep at Sompting Abbotts is where your child officially begins his or her education. The department comprises Pre-Prep 1 (Nursery); Pre-Prep 2 (Reception); Pre-Prep 3 (Year 1) and Pre-Prep 4 (Year 2). These year-groups are housed in the 'Old Stables' building.Class sizes are kept small, with most classes having maximum 15 pupils. Children are taught by a close team of experienced teachers supported by teaching assistants. It means our friendly department has the time to really build firm relationships with your child and your family.In the Pre-Prep, pupils are taught English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, RE, Cookery and Design Technology by the class teacher. Specialist teachers are used for Music, Art, French and PE. Classrooms are equipped with Smart Boards, computers and digital tablets. We have a shared Junior Library with comfy cushions.
Prep
The Main School (Upper Prep Department) at West Sussex prep school Sompting Abbotts is where your child moves to for the next step in his or her schooling. The children leave the Old Stables building for classrooms in the Main House. From here on, independence in learning, self-discipline and taking responsibility become key, alongside a sense of fun, exploration and discovery.Small class sizes are a key strength for us, with most classes having a maximum of 15 children. In the Prep, all children still have a form teacher but now most individual subjects are taught by specialist teachers. In the Prep (Years 3 to 8), the scheme of work is based upon the National Curriculum but extends far beyond it in preparing children for the Public School Common Entrance and Scholarship Examinations. All pupils sit Common Entrance and pupils’ scholarships success across all disciplines is strong.
Extra Curricular

Forest School
Learning is not confined to the classroom at West Sussex independent school Sompting Abbotts. We support the ethos of the Forest School movement and its focus on fresh air and child-centred learning. Our 30 acres of grounds within the South Downs National Park give us the perfect environment to do this. They comprise mature woodland areas, wild flower areas, chalk grassland and a conservation pond. So we've plenty of natural resources to apply and adapt to all kinds of lessons. Playing to their fascination with nature makes it easy to teach green issues to children. Right from the nursery stage, your child will get to sing around the fire, learn to use and make tools, and build dens. They dig in the mud, identify creepie-crawlies with magnifying glasses and learn about the changing seasons and how to recognise different flowers and leaf shapes.
Art
The Performing and Creative Arts are a big and bright part of our varied life at West Sussex prep school Sompting Abbotts. Throughout the year there are numerous opportunities for our children to perform on stage or different audiences and showcase their skills in acting, singing, dancing and public speaking and listening.By offering pupils opportunities to immerse themselves in art, design, dance, debating, drama and music, we give them a truly rounded education. Sport
There’s no doubt that sport is an important part of our school life at Sompting Abbotts. The emphasis is on fun and teamwork – and not winning and losing. The sports programme is inclusive and varied and encourages both teamwork and individual skills. The pupils start young and benefit from excellent and varied sports facilities. It’s not long before the prep children are competing against other local prep and primary schools.Alongside all the sports you would expect such as rugby, football, cricket, netball, tennis and gymnastics, there are a few you might not. These include golf, squash, modern dance, archery, fencing, orienteering, mountain biking and shooting.
