Description

Putney High School is an independent all-girls school in Putney, London for students from the ages 4–18.

At Rokeby they aim to give your son the very best start in life. They want to give him a sound and strong foundation in his Academic subjects, to enable him to develop in Sports, the Arts and an all-round and exciting curriculum with plenty of additional adventures besides. They want him to be fulfilled and engaged but also to learn the unwritten lessons: how to treat himself well, and others too, to get along with everyone, to achieve in his own right and as part of a team. How to experience success and feel proud, but also to cope with challenges and setbacks. They pride ourselves on the way in which they educate and support all of the boys at Rokeby. They treat them as individuals: they focus on each and every boy. They want each boy to achieve his best in every area of learning so that they become smart, skilful and kind and leave us confident and positive, happy and successful. There are many ways in which the boys achieve but they always do so when motivated and happy, with the right blend of support and challenge. They give the boys the opportunity to develop skills in a range of activities beyond the core academic subjects, helping them to find things they enjoy and build their confidence, which then benefits their academic studies and personal development. We focus on their strengths but want them to develop competence and confidence in many areas.

Academic
From the moment a boy starts at Rokeby, they focus on him as an individual and help him find activities at which he excels. They take the confidence and happiness this develops and ensure it is applied across everything the boys do. The boys go on to high-quality senior schools with a large number achieving a range of prestigious scholarships which is testament to the focus on each and every boy. Rokeby offers a broad, balanced curriculum in keeping with its aims as a preparatory school offering the best possible full-time education to boys aged 4-13. The rich and varied curriculum keeps boys stimulated, engaged and motivated. They successfully deliver a comprehensive and balanced syllabus that surpasses the National Curriculum requirements and provides the right learning to prepare the boys in every way for their future. They teach boys a breadth of skills to equip them for their future schools, foster life-long learning and achieve their full potential. We develop each and every boy as an individual, celebrating their strengths and nurturing new skills to encourage them to achieve.

The Upper School
The last two years at Rokeby provide boys with a real academic advantage over their counterparts in senior schools. In Years 7 and 8 all subjects are taught by specialists. Small class sizes and academic streaming ensure that every boy is supported and stretched in line with their individual needs in order to reach their potential.Boys going into Year 7 are first to experience what makes Prep schools unique and special. Knowing they act as their safety net, they embrace challenges they may once have shied away from and aim high in everything they do. The ‘Old Boys’ are testament that this feeling of empowerment in oneself becomes firmly embedded with them for life. Here boys are at the top of the school. They believe it is important to recognise the status of the Year 8 boys as being the senior pupils in the school. They offer them posts of responsibility whilst at the same time ensuring they understand the need for tolerance and respect in their position as role models for each other and for the younger boys.

Things to note

Drama
Drama is an integral part of life at Rokeby. We have specialist teachers who help our boys develop craft, interpersonal skills and self-confidence. A number of the boys gain Drama scholarships to top senior schools. The curriculum is designed to allow Drama-specific techniques to be developed alongside teamwork, communication and presentation skills; whilst also developing self-confidence, self-esteem and self-reflection.The development of skills is framed within a narrative structure that is engaging for the boys. In the lower school, narratives are linked to class topics wherever possible to enrich the work covered in class.

Design and Technology
Design and Technology gives boys the opportunity to engage in creative and practical problem-solving. The projects are exciting and focus on developing skills. The work includes all aspects of design, working with materials and food technology. Boys are encouraged to solve problems creatively, be technologically literate and develop an awareness of the physical environment.

Music
Rokeby has a flourishing Music department. All boys from Reception to Year 8 benefit from weekly class music lessons. Topics of study include singing, recorder, music theory, ukulele, African drumming, samba, keyboards, composition and in Year 4, violin tuition for a term and a half. Boys also work towards their Bronze Arts Award in Year 7.Around half of the boys learn musical instruments and our team of 10 eminent visiting teachers offer lessons in singing and the whole range of instruments. There is an annual instrumental competition called The Rowe Cup and an annual singing competition called The Allen Cup which take place in the Spring term.

Sport
Rokeby has a history of significant sporting achievement. As well as sporting excellence, they value the individual improvement made by each boy through the underlying philosophy of sport for all. They believe that Sport, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a unique and vital contributor to a boy’s physical development and well-being. The broad and balanced physical education curriculum and Games programme develops boys’ self-confidence and ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations.

Activities & Clubs
Boys flourish when given access to a wide variety of opportunities, often discovering an interest or talent which may be developed throughout their life. When your son joins Rokeby they not only aim to provide an excellent education within the curriculum, but also to introduce him to an exciting world of activities and clubs to enhance his overall learning experience.
