Rugeley School is an independent specialist school with two attached children’s homes, based in a beautiful area of rural Staffordshire. Offering placements for children and young people (boys and girls) aged 5 to 19 years, the school caters for those with a primary diagnosis of autism or in some cases evidence of behaviours which are in accordance with such a diagnosis. All the students have associated learning difficulties within the moderate to severe range. Rugeley School respects autism and prepares young people with ASD to be as happy and independent as possible through the provision of a safe, welcoming, relaxed, yet structured environment.
Curiculum
Rugeley School’s curriculum draws significant content from the National Curriculum but is expertly adapted to meet every young people’s individual needs. The curriculum is built around the following seven areas, as set out in the Independent School Standards:Linguistic, Mathematical, Scientific, Technological, Human and social, Physical, Aesthetic and creative. At Rugeley School, Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils follow the National Curriculum but, from Key Stage 4 onwards, greater emphasis is placed on following individual interest. All the pupils work towards accredited awards with AQA, OCR and ASDAN.
Enriching learning
They provide an ‘Enrichment’ curriculum, offering our young people access to a wide range of interests which they may choose to pursue. They believe these structured activities help the students to develop better life outcomes through increasing interests, personal skills and employment. Vocational and work experience opportunities form an important part of the curriculum for many of the pupils post-16.
Activities and facilities
The ethos of the residential homes seeks to promote the development of social behaviours, independence and personal skills, and to offer opportunities to practice then in real life settings. There is an emphasis on community inclusion as well as targeting skills in personal care and home management. Young people have plentiful opportunities to make choices and take part in regular physical activities, take up hobbies and visit facilities and attractions in the community
