Sir William Borlase's Grammar School is leading State Secondary school in Marlow. This is a Selective school for kids age 11 to 18 years. Gender - Mixed
Welcome to Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School where we are proud of our heritage as we approach our 400th birthday and excited to be inspiring and empowering the aspirations of our students today. A state-funded school in the centre of Marlow, Borlase is recognised for excellent academic learning and outstanding extra and super-curricular programme.
Founded in 1624 on the same site we occupy today, the brick and flint Cloisters, clock tower and Chapel of Borlase share a street with Mary Shelley’s cottage where she wrote Frankenstein, TS Eliot’s house and the original site of the Royal Military College now at Sandhurst. Behind the older buildings the campus opens out to reveal a modern 21st century school with the latest technologies. In September 2021 we opened a brand new Sports Hall and have a new student refectory planned for the near future.
Key Stage 3
The Key Stage 3 Curriculum is designed to introduce our pupils to a wide range of subjects across the academic disciplines. The distinctive, creative curriculum in Years 7 and 8 is rich in cultural learning and empowers all our pupils with important, valuable skills that support personal and academic development; these include creative intelligence, independent thinking, collaborative skills, resilience, confidence, leadership, time-management, interpretation and empathy.
Key Stage 4
In years 9-11 subjects are taught as disciplines; teachers enrich learning and inspire them with ideas outside and beyond the GCSE specification. There are trips, visits, practical explorations, independent research projects that enrich the learning experience and promote deeper understanding for all students including SEND and disadvantaged learners; pupils are not on a five term conveyor belt moving towards an examination.
Key Stage 5
The Curriculum at KS5 offers students choice from a wide selection of A Level subjects to facilitate their moving on to their many different chosen pathways beyond Borlase. Where many schools have narrowed their provision we are committed to providing a full range embracing all sciences, languages, humanities and the arts. Most students study 3 full A Levels.
SEND
At Borlase, we work closely with all students to support them in their learning and development. Each Key Stage has its own dedicated Learning Mentors or, in the 6th Form, Student Support Officers. These members of our staff are focused on enabling students to develop the strategies and approaches that will enable themselves to best manage their learning. Where a student needs specific, targeted support because of a particular learning need, they are assisted by our SEND team. Mrs Ashby is our school's SEND co-ordinator and Miss Cork is our trained specialist SEND teacher. Together, they are able to assess our student so that the necessary support can be put in place. The SEND team can be contacted using [email protected] to instigate a discussion about potential specific learning support at Borlase.
Performing Arts
Borlase has a reputation for excellence in the Peforming Arts: Music, Drama and Dance are a very important part of the school’s ethos. We value all the creative arts and believe strongly in the entitlement of all young people to experience specialist teaching of these subjects, giving them the opportunity to develop their confidence, creativity and skills.
Sport
Sport forms a great feature of life at Sir William Borlase. All of our students get to experience a wide variety of different sporting activities through PE and games lessons as well as in the wide selection of extra curricular clubs.
Trips and Visits
The calendar of trips for students across the Key Stages reflects the school’s belief that learning can extend well beyond the classroom. There are cultural visits to the theatre, galleries, museums and creative writing retreats. Field Trips allow students to do practical explorations in Geography, Geology, Biology and History. There are expeditions to Norway, the Arctic and Uganda and Sports and Arts Tours have most recently gone to New York, Australia and Malta. Every year KS4 pupils visit the Space Camp in Alabama and the Berlin as well as taking part in long-established exhanges with our partner schools in France, Germany and Spain.

Admission to Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 (and to Year 7 from 1 January each academic year) will be handled in accordance with the school’s Late Transfer Procedure.
Admission in 6 form
