Things to note

  • Extra and super-curricular opportunities develop a variety of skills and qualities which will benefit students whether they are applying for university or entering the world of employment. Students' choices of activities will build a strong individual profile which will set them apart in this competitive environment.
  • Super-curricular activities help students explore what they would like to study and very importantly can develop a new lifelong interest. They provide a wide range of opportunities, which are continually evolving to meet the needs of each year group. Opportunities range from the very academic e.g. the EPQ to the vocational e.g. Engineering Education Scheme and Arts Award. There are also options to learn new skills e.g. Musical Futures, Cookery and Debating.
  • All Year 12 students select two super-curricular options, unless they are studying Further Maths, when they will select one option.

Extra Curricular

  • With 200 clubs and societies available there are many possibilities for pupils to excel in the range of clubs and activities available to them everyday either at lunch break or after School.
  • Music is a huge part of life at St Albans School, reflected in the wide range and variety of music opportunities available through our co-curricular programme. Many pupils perform in a variety of concerts and events throughout the year. The Department runs a diverse programme of musical activities during lunchtimes, and after school on Monday and Tuesday evenings.
  • Drama is an important and popular component of our co-curricular programme with many pupils choosing to take part and experience live performing. Performances take place on the stage in New Hall, in our studio space in New Place, our dedicated Drama Department, or at the Amphitheatre in our school grounds where pupils can enjoy the chance to perform outdoors.
  • Chess is a popular sport at St Albans School. Our Chess Club offers opportunities for all ages and levels of ability with weekly meetings for recreational and competitive players.
  • Every pupil experiences a Games afternoon each week encompassing a range of sports and physical activities. We have a number of pupils who compete at County, National and International levels in a number of sports. Inter-school fixtures are normally organised on a year group basis and in the major sports we often field up to four teams in an age group. We have a thriving House System with four houses competing each year in all sports. All pupils have an opportunity to represent the School or their House at their level at some stage.

Admission Details

We are a leading independent School for boys aged 11-18 and we welcome girls into our Sixth Form at 16+. Our main entry points are at 11+, 13+ and 16+.

For 11+ entry in September 2024, the Assessment Day is on Tuesday 9 January 2024. Registration is now closed.

At our 11+ Assessment we will be using a new online adaptive testing process. This new system is bespoke for St Albans School and seeks to discover a candidate’s potential in Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning as well as creative and critical thinking, analysis, synthesis and problem-solving. This is a modern and efficient testing process which is fair, clear, robust and accessible to candidates from all schools and backgrounds. The adaptive aspect of the tests provides for greater differentiation and will result in a more precise evaluation of ability for high-ability candidates than standard tests. The tests are based on the National Curriculum which allows candidates in both state and independent schools to have equal accessibility.

The testing will be completed online at St Albans School during the 11+ Assessment Day and candidates will have a chance to undertake a familiarisation task before each test begins. There are seven parts to the assessment including Maths, English, Non-verbal Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Puzzles and Problem Solving and Creative Comprehension. There is no change to our interview process and all candidates will still have a 1:1 individual interview with a member of staff on the Assessment Day.
