Facilities

EARLY YEARS
St Ambrose Preparatory School Early Years department comprises of a Nursery class for 3 and 4 year old children and a Reception class for 4 & 5 year old children. St Ambrose is exempt from teaching the Early Years National Foundation Curriculum. This enables the teachers in this setting to introduce more formal and advanced work on writing, reading and numbers earlier in the children’s education. Although play still has an important role in the Early Years, this formal approach ensures the children make accelerated progress. By the end of Year 1 when formal testing is introduced, the vast majority of pupils will be above age related expectations in both Literacy and Numeracy.

INFANT DEPARTMENT
The Infant Department consists of Infant 1 (Year 1) and Infant 2 (Year 2), accommodating 5 and 6 years olds respectively. Development for these children very much builds on the sound footings established during the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Well qualified, experienced teachers support and nurture the children, helping them to consolidate their emerging skills and understanding, and leading them towards becoming confident, more independent learners. Part-time help from Teaching Assistants, and specialist teaching in P.E., French and I.C.T. provide more and varied opportunities for an engaging and stimulating curriculum. Our specialist music teacher takes the pupils for music and singing.  Children in Infant 2 are encouraged to learn the recorder, and play in ensembles at concerts and assemblies.  Some of the children may progress to playing a variety of other instruments taught by our peripatetic staff.

JUNIOR DEPARTMENT
The Junior Department consists of four age-groups Prep 1, Prep 2, Prep 3 and Prep 4, equivalent to Year 3, 4, 5 and 6, serving children between 7 and 11 years old. High standards of work and behaviour are expected and each individual is encouraged to give of their best at all times. Although emphasis is given to the thorough grounding needed in Reading, English and Mathematics we strive for excellence in all areas. There is a broad, balanced curriculum including the following subjects: Religious Education, Science, History, Geography, Music, Art/D.T., P.E./Games, I.C.T. and M.F.L.

NURSERY
The nursery class is a perfect start to your child’s education and has a maximum class size of 16, 3 and 4 year old children. Within the nursery class we have highly qualified and experienced staff who offer a lovely stimulating learning environment for the pupils in their care. The nursery staff are well aware how children learn best and offer lots of different opportunities to ensure learning takes place. They work closely with each other to ensure activities are well planned, differentiated to help each individual child to reach their full potential. They offer a more structured and formal education as well as fantastic indoor and outdoor resources to enhance the children’s learning. The children will be taught in different ways including teacher led, small groups, one-to-one and child led activities dependent upon what is being taught.

School hall
They are lucky to have a large, modern, purpose-built hall which is used regularly for assemblies, PE lessons, dinnertime and contents. This hall allows the children ample space to be creative, put on school plays and practice gymnastics, for which they have multiple pieces of equipment.

School playground and outdoor classroom
2 extensive playgrounds with a variety of equipment including 3 trim trails that they were kindly gifted by SAPA and an outdoor, wooden classroom. In the summer, children enjoy the occasional lesson in the sunshine or a lunchtime outdoors.
