St Helens Montessori School opened as a Nursery in East Farleigh, Kent in 1989 and due to parental demand was extended to include primary classes in 2005 for those who wish their children to continue with them. The school is located in a well adapted coach house surrounded by five acres of grounds in a beautiful rural setting in the medieval village of East Farleigh, just 3 miles from Maidstone and the M20. The aim at St. Helens Montessori School is to create and sustain an optimum Montessori environment to enable each child to realize his or her richest potential and to become an independent, self-motivating, informed, compassionate and contributing member of the world community.
Nursery
St Helens Montessori Nursery welcomes children from the age of two to five years old. The child-teacher ratio is a maximum of 6:1. The Nursery consists of two large classrooms and a kitchen area for the use of the children. The environment has been designed following Montessori principles in order to create a calm and inspiring atmosphere both in the school and in the enchanting grounds that surround it.In this safe and motivating environment the little pupils can fully develop their potential and can make the school, as Montessori said, their home (Casa dei Bambini).
Elemantry
For those who wish their children to continue in Montessori Education, they have two Elementary classrooms run by Montessori Primary teachers. The Lower Elementary class is for children aged 5 to 8 and the Upper Elementary for children aged 8 to 11. They have a vast amount of Montessori Primary equipment in both classrooms. As well as the core subjects of Mathematics, Language, History, Geography, Botany, Zoology, Science, Religion, Art and Crafts, Sports and PE, the children also have weekly lessons in French, Music and Musical Theory, Drama, Chess, Gardening, ICT and programming, Forest School and optional Recorder, Piano and Judo lessons.
All teachers at St Helens Montessori School, both in the Nursery and Elementary classes, are fully Montessori trained (Early Years and/or Primary). They keep updated on current educational issues by regularly attending professional development sessions, courses and conferences, both in the UK and abroad.
