Kindergarten
Based in the grounds of St. Dominic’s Grammar School, the Little Big Nursery offers childcare and early education for children aged from six weeks. Open for fifty-two weeks of the year (closing only on Bank Holidays), we offer childcare from 07:30 until 18:00. We also offer term time only contracts that fall in line with the Staffordshire school term dates. Parents have access to three different sessions: Morning (07:30-12:30), Afternoon (13:00-18:00) and Full Day (07:30-18:00). There is no minimum requirement in terms of sessions, however, they will work closely with families to ensure your child is receiving the best possible outcome from their time at nursery. They accept children who receive the Think2’s funding, along with the EEF funding (including extended 30 hours) for three and four year olds. Pre Preparatory
The early years of a child’s education are the ones that will inspire and guide choices made in later life. These years will discover the personality of your child and provide inspiration for a love of learning and exploration. This is why our Pre-Preparatory Department aims to give the best start to every child.In Reception the children follow the EYFS Areas of Learning and Development. There are three Prime Areas: Physical Development; Communication and Language; and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. Learning is predominantly through play and exploration. With a forward-looking curriculum and small class sizes, the children are given the tools to make outstanding progress in a safe, secure and stimulating environment.Outdoor learning is also an important part of our Pre-Preparatory curriculum. They offer a dedicated, secure, new outdoor activity area, designed specifically by the School to maximise learning, through fun and motivating activities.
Prep School
During your child’s time in the Preparatory Department, they develop a Unique Learning Programme centred on their individual requirements, aptitude and personality.The structure of our rich and broad Preparatory curriculum is designed to both stimulate and support the developing child. Subjects such as History, Languages, Music, Art, PE, ICT, Design and technology and Sport are taught by highly specialised teachers.Stem subjects are enriched with practical hands on activities and experiments. Pupils can also opt for instrumental tuition with the experienced Peripatetic teachers. The children benefit from a seamless transition from the Preparatory department to the Senior School.St. Dominic’s also offer an ’11+ programme,’ which is tailored towards each individual child’s ability.
Senior School
St. Dominic’s Grammar School is a vibrant, happy community where children are given opportunities to thrive both academically and socially. Small class sizes facilitate dedicated learning and individualised teaching has resulted in our students consistently, achieving some of the best GCSE results in the region.Specific learning goals are set and performance is monitored regularly, as they continue to develop the children. Benchmarking and Cognitive Ability Tests allow them to track achievement and guide further tuition where needed. They encourage all Senior students to become independent learners and to manage their own work through our structured mentoring scheme.As pupils enter the Senior department, they are taught by dedicated specialist subject teachers, with individual learning goals set and performance monitored.
Sixth Form
St. Dominic’s Sixth Form provides a positive and seamless progression from the Senior School, treating pupils as young adults and preparing them for their future beyond the School. Our strong academic record in the Sixth Form emphasises a personalised approach to learning. They offer a multitude of A Level courses and provide a balance of traditional, academic and more practical subjects.The Sixth Form Centre is a modern award winning building which provides a fantastic facility for study, research and recreation. Students are also welcome to make use of the Senior ICT Suite and Ipads, although many do prefer to bring their own laptop with access to Wifi and printers. In recognition of students growing maturity and independence, pupils abide by a ‘Business Dress’ code.
Sport
Sport is an important part of life at St Dominic’s Grammar School. The lessons that they learn through sport stay with them throughout our lives and help to teach us vital life skills, that are the building blocks for a healthy, happy, and successful future.Through sport, they learn the importance of teamwork, resilience, and perseverance. They learn to be gracious in victory and in defeat. They learn that the bodies can be these amazing machines if well looked after.
Music
St. Dominic’s has a flourishing Music department, with over half of the pupils enjoying tuition from specialist Peripatetic teachers in orchestral instruments, piano, guitar, drums and solo singing.Set in a modern state-of-the-art recording studio, students have the facilities to enhance and develop their musical ability. They believe that creative subjects such as Music, work in harmony with the core academic subjects. General memory is improved as pupils read and memorise sheet music, which as a result, benefits them in other subjects and examinations.
Performing Arts
Pupils are encouraged to explore creative subjects including Art, Textiles, and Drama as part of their learning. Selection Criteria: Selective
For entry in Year 7, both internal and external pupils are required to undertake our 11+ entrance assessment. The testing will consist of English, Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning. Candidates must demonstrate a sufficient proficiency in the majority of tests, thus allowing access to the curriculum they offer, before a place can be offered. In addition to testing, they look for enthusiasm and commitment in all those who wish to join St. Dominic’s Grammar School.
