Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls has a long tradition of providing students with a high quality, broad and balanced education. This is a happy and purposeful learning environment, where staff and students work together and enjoy coming to school. Here, teachers are subject specialists who share their enthusiasm as well as their knowledge. Students are encouraged to develop ‘a growth mindset’ in order to see the value of effort, have a positive approach to overcoming difficulties and take responsibility for their learning.

Facilities

Year 7-9 Curriculum

Students in Years 7 to 9 study a broad and balanced curriculum. In Year 7, the language studied is French with Spanish introduced in the summer term. Year 9 is an enrichment year in which the GCSE curriculum is started in some subjects and Cloud 9

Year 10-11 Curriculum
Students in Years 10 and 11 study for GCSEs in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics and a language, either French or Spanish. In addition, they select up to three further GCSE subjects. At the beginning of Year 10, parents are issued a guide to GCSEs to enable them to support their daughters during their GCSE studies. All students have core PE lessons each week and PSHE is delivered through assemblies, registration activities and off-timetable Focus Days.

Year 12-13 Curriculum
Students choose from a wide range of A-Levels at Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls. Most students study 3 A-Level subjects, some study 4, and all students have the opportunity to complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) during Year 12. In addition to the academic curriculum, there is also a Skills and Choices curriculum in which students experience a varied programme of PSHE, visiting speakers and support in making decisions for their next steps after sixth form. There are also weekly well-being sessions.

Personal, social, health and economic education (PSHE) plays an essential part in equipping students to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives. It encourages them to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the issues they may encounter now and in the future. It also helps to build confidence, empathy, resilience and self-esteem, to identify and manage risk and make informed choices for their lives.

Extra Curricular Opportunities
There are numerous extra-curricular opportunities for students at Sutton Girls. Students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of activities outside their timetabled curriculum lessons. In addition to trips, sports competitions, residentials, visiting speakers, STEM experiences and theatre companies, each term an extra-curricular schedule is published promoting details of the activities on offer at lunchtimes, before and after the school day throughout the term.
