Manchester High School for Girls

The Manchester Grammar School is the largest independent day school for boys in the United Kingdom. for kids aged 7 to 18.
Selection Criteria: Selective
Junior School: Applications are welcomed for entry to any of Years 3, 4, 5 or 6, subject to spaces being available. However, if a boy is not offered a place in Years 3, 4 or 5, we ask his parents to wait two years if they wish him to be re-assessed. This allows boys the chance to develop over an appropriate period of time between assessments and to enjoy the teaching they receive in their primary or preparatory school. Any candidate who is unsuccessful for Year 6 entry is welcome to apply for entry to the Senior School at Year 7. On the day of their assessment boys are taught in groups of up to 10 and take part in a variety of lessons and activities. These include a Maths lesson and a topic-based lesson, and boys are set short tests on what they have learnt. Some creative writing is also set. Assessment Days take place throughout the academic year.
Senior School: Boys applying for entry to Year 7 attend one of our Assessment Days and also sit an Entrance Exam. On the Assessment Day, boys are taught a Maths lesson, a topic-based lesson, and participate in a series of group activities. They also complete a piece of creative writing. It is important to note that the content and topics to be taught on Assessment Days will not reflect material a boy will have studied before. There is therefore no preparation required, or indeed possible, for the day itself. This places all boys on an equal footing. In January, boys are then asked to attend Entrance Examination Day, on which they will sit two English papers and two Arithmetic papers. In the afternoon, they take part in one of a choice of activities (e.g. sporting, science-based, musical, outward bounds) that reflect the opportunities available to MGS pupils. Lunch is provided in between the exams and the afternoon’s activities. This year’s Entrance Exam is scheduled for Wednesday 19 January 2022.
Sixth Form: They welcome Sixth Form applications from students who are currently studying GCSEs (or equivalents, if abroad) in Year 11.Students should be aged between 15 years and nine months and 17 years and three months on 1 September in the year of entry. They base judgements for entry on an Assessment Day. These days are tailored to suit the likely combination of subjects indicated by candidates. The day ends with an interview to allow us to gain a clear picture of co-curricular interests as well as academic passions.Conditional offers are made on the basis of performance on the Assessment Day. Typically, they set offers of a student achieving an average of a grade 7 (equivalent to an A in the old grading system) across his GCSE subjects, with at least a grade 8 in the subjects they are choosing to study. If you would like further information about our admissions process or Sixth Form courses, please contact Admissions department ([email protected]).
Fees for the year 2022/23 are £13,980 per year, or £4,660 per term.
Tuition fees cover teaching in the regular curriculum, use of school books and equipment, stationery (excluding items detailed on the equipment list) and other materials, public examination fees in the Senior School (except re-sits), but not extras, e.g. private music lessons.
School meals are optional in the Senior School but compulsory in the Junior School. There is no separate charge for school meals for boys in Years 3 and 4. Other expenses are normally restricted to uniform and voluntary school camps and trips.
209 pupils currently receive full or partial bursaries. Bursary places are available for boys joining Years 3 and 4, Year 7 and the Sixth Form, with the majority of funding being offered for entry in Year 7, and are only offered to families who are permanently resident in the UK, and living the North West of England, at the point of application. The School's ability to offer bursaries depends upon the level of funding available.
Fee assistance is based on the total gross income of the household in which the pupil lives and will be on a sliding scale such that parents in receipt of assessable income in excess of £54,000 will receive no assistance for the 2022/23 academic year, whilst those with income of £30,000 or below will receive full remission of fees.
Family incomes are reviewed annually and the value of the bursary is adjusted accordingly. If you wish to apply for financial assistance, you must do so when making an Application for Entry. They do not offer academic scholarships.
