Description

Vocational Training Centre (VTC) Independent School is for pupils with behavioural, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties who have either been permanently excluded or at risk of being permanently excluded from school. Currently this school caters for, up to 24 students from the ages 14 to 18.

Facilities

  • There is a fully fitted kitchen area for the students to have breakfast and lunch accompanied with a large dining area.
  • The centre consists of multiple classrooms that have the equipment to teach the students for English, Maths and IT. this includes laptops for each individual student, and smart boards allowing engaging interesting lessons. These are situated on the lower level and a larger teaching room upstairs.
  • At the rear of the unit, they have a large 3600sq foot mechanical training area equipped with ramps, tyre machines, compressors and various cars for students to practice on. They also have a large mezzanine floor area with lockers and a safe changing area for students.

Admission Details

The pupils need to match the following criteria:

  • Must have an EHCP or are in the process of applying an EHCP, with supporting documentation.

As well as having an EHCP, the pupils may fall within the following categories:

  • Permanently excluded from mainstream school
  • At risk of permanent exclusion
  • Pupils new to the authority who were previously educated in an alternative setting
  • Pupils new to the authority who have a history of disrupted education
  • Pupils referred for alternative provision on either a full-time or part-time basis

All applications for places at VTC Independent School will be managed by the Headteacher and the referring organisation. It is required that a referral to VTC will come directly from the referring organisation. All referrals will be supported by detailed information from the referring organisation, including the EHCP and Person Centred Annual Review (PCAR) where relevant.  This will form the basis of an initial risk assessment and will help provide:

  • The most appropriate provision
  • The nature and duration of the placement
  • The appropriate pupil exit strategy

If, based on the information available, it is felt that VTC Independent School can meet the pupil’s needs, a meeting will be arranged. This will be either a home and/or school visit to meet the pupil, parents/carers and social worker/support worker where appropriate.  Other services, agencies (e.g., KCC, Social Services etc), parents and carers will be asked to supply additional information to support the referral process.

Places are offered only when agreement has been reached with VTC Independent School, the referring organisation and parents or carers.
