  • Cave Hill: For generations, Cave Hill has been synonymous with Belfast, with its imposing outline visible throughout the city. The landmark, named for the five caves located on the side of the cliffs, contains a wealth of natural, archaeological and historical features.

  • Orienteering courses: Challenge your mind and body with our orienteering courses at Cave Hill Country Park. Call into Belfast Castle reception to pick up your free map. Orienteering is suitable for all ages and abilities. Follow the route of your choice at your own pace, which could be walking, jogging or racing. Our courses are ideal for families, schools and community groups.
  • Adventurous Playground: Cave Hill Adventurous Playground is a free and suitable for children aged three to 14 years old. The playground has swings, slides, rockers, roundabouts, a climbing space net and an aerial runway.
  • Visitor Centre: Find out more about the history of the Cave Hill area at our free-to-visit centre. You can find it inside Belfast Castle, in our cellar basement. 
  • The Millennium Maze: The maze at Belfast Castle has been revived by a passionate group of volunteers from the Cave Hill Conservation Campaign (CCC). It was officially opened to celebrate and welcome the new millennium in 2002, the maze offers a unique experience for locals and tourists visiting the area and is just a 5-minute walk to the north of the castle.
  • Other attractions: The estate contains landscaped gardens, mature mixed woodland and a forest trail. It offers superb views of the city from a variety of vantage points. It is home to many different wildlife species, including long-eared owls, sparrowhawks and Belfast's rarest plant; the town hall clock.

What to see

Events:

  • Guided Walks: Date: Various dates in September and October. Join us on a guided walk arranged by the Belfast City Council Outreach Team and Cave Hill Conservation. All events are free. You should be prepared for bad weather wear and bring footwear suitable for rough ground. Some walks will be moderately strenuous and might be challenging for some walkers. Easy walks are graded E and more challenging ones are graded M. Young people under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult. The activities may be changed on the day, depending on weather or other adverse circumstances.
  • Breastie Market: Date: Thursday 9 October 2025, 6pm to 9pm. The Breastie Market is a fundraising event for breast cancer charities. Buy a ticket and visit the market. At the market, you can buy goods and gifts from local makers, artists and small businesses.

  • By Car: Belfast Castle is close to the city centre and wider road networks. It is a ten-minute car drive from the city centre and 15 minutes from George Best Belfast City Airport. Belfast Castle is easily accessible from the M2 and from Belfast city centre by the Antrim Road.
  • By Bus: Take Metro Bus Route 1 departing from Upper Queen Street in Belfast city centre. Get off at Strathmore Park stop on Antrim Road. The route to the castle is clearly signposted.
  • By Foot & Bike: If you’d like a more scenic, active journey to Belfast Castle, you can walk or cycle to see us. Free bicycle parking is available.
  • Parking: There are free car parks on site, available on a first-come, first-served basis.
