Bod of Gremista and Textile Museum located at the Böd of Gremista, just outside Lerwick, the Shetland Textile Museum is a community museum, with uniquely in the UK a single focus on Shetland historical and contemporary textiles, especially knitting.

It has been a registered Scottish charity, SC026905, since 1997 and is an Accredited Museum of Museums Galleries Scotland. Alongside the Museum we run a programme of annual exhibitions, events and demonstrations.

Collection: The Collection held by the Shetland Textile Museum at The Böd of Gremista in Lerwick comprises nearly eight hundred items, including Fair-Isle and lace knitting, knitwear, taatit rugs, tools, tweed, and items by contemporary Shetland makers. In addition, an Archive and Mini-Library is currently under development to complement The Collection. Fair Isle, Lace, New acquisitions, Other Knitting, Novelties, Rugs & Blankets, Tools, Tweed.
Exhibitions & Events: Exhibitions are an essential aspect of our work to provide access to the Collection. They are held annually at the Böd focussing on a theme related to Shetland Textiles, and change every year.
Archive: The Archive is a complementary part of the Collection. It has been established from the documents, papers, photographs and plans retained by the late Bess Jamieson among others. In addition, it includes a record of the exhibitions held annually over a thirty five year period. To accompany the exhibitions background material is kept in a set of Research Files which is included in the Archive.

Location: There is no public transport directly to the Museum, but there is a bus-stop on the main road, a few hundred yards away, where the various buses for the North Mainland will stop. The Town bus service goes to Shetland College during term time, and this is just beyond the museum – check timetables. The Museum is 1.7 miles/ 2.7km from the Town Centre, and 0.6 miles/1 km from the Holmsgarth Ferry Terminal, and is easy walking on pavements. Taxis run from the Town Centre, approx. cost £6.00, or can be booked by telephone. There is ample parking at the Museum.
