Fort Charlotte is a historic artillery fort overlooking the Sound of Bressay in the centre of Lerwick, Shetland. Originally built to defend against Dutch and later French warships, the current structure dates largely from its rebuild during the War of American Independence in 1781. Named after Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, the fort once housed 270 soldiers guarding these strategic waters.
Visitors can wander among the massive stone walls and explore the fort much as it would have appeared in the 1780s. Although earlier versions of the fort were damaged or abandoned during the Anglo-Dutch wars, the later reconstruction remains well preserved today. Set in a central location in Lerwick, it offers impressive views across the harbour and surrounding coastline.
Fort Charlotte is free to visit, making it an accessible historical attraction for all.
Fort Charlotte provides a fascinating glimpse into Shetland’s military and maritime history. Its commanding position and sturdy defensive design reflect centuries of coastal defence strategy. For visitors exploring Lerwick, it is a worthwhile stop combining history, heritage and scenic views in one place.
